How to play CMS with Ulloa

The following quote on Dobbie thread is interesting
When he played on the left of a front three in the Barnes roll he failed to grasp the defensive aspect of the role. In fact he may as well have just stood on the side of the pitch and waited until the rest of the tea got the ball back.

If we assume Ulloa plays in the middle with Buckley/Lua Lua on left, how do you see CMS playing? If his new role is to support from the right, running at defences playing off Ulloas hold up play, is there a danger they will play too far apart, as has happened previously? Or that CMS will get dragged back into defensive positions too often? And if the plan is to genuinely play 2 upfront why haven't we tried this much over the last 18 months?

All good questions and I am glad Gus has to work it out not me! My take would be Ulloa and CMS up top. Orlandi and Buckley left and right although these positons would be floating so to speak as we all know Orlandi and Bucker can affect play from various positions. With Hammond and Bridders holding, tidying and supplying the other 4. It's gonna have to be fluid as always but I actually think after his comments today he really wants them playing close together to get the best from CMS.

I think we might see a slight shift in formation, not to standard 442 but maybe to something that can accommodate Ulloa and CMS.

Ditch formations completely and have them run wherever they want. It is the only way in which we will be able to experience true creativity in the sport.

Cms to have a free roaming role behind Ulloa and in front of midfield was my guess in a conversation this morning :)

Something like this ? but if Vicente is fit - I see CMS moving to the bench.

Hmm... Vicente, Orlandi and Barnes all already play that role pretty well. Not sure how it can work. For me, CMS spends most of his time running away from goal to the wings (which is why he struggles in my opinion because we look for him down the middle). Maybe a wing role would suit him better. Kinda like this:

CMS-----Orlandi-----Buckley
----------Ulloa-------------

Which could flex to:

Buckley--------------Orlandi
------CMS----Ulloa---------

Three of the front 4 would be more or less interchangeable.

I don't see CMS playing behind Ulloa, I'd say that was a role more suited to Vicente/Dobbie/Barnes but as Gus has said that he wants them playing together I can't think of any other way. Playing two up just isn't his way and would have our 2 CMF putting in too much of a shift I think

I'm sure he'll be experimenting with a few different set ups for the first few games but obviously (?) all will involve Ulloa

If Vicente is fit then surely he would FLOAT behind Ulloa leaving CMS on the bench.

CMS on the wing would be insanity. He needs to be near goal.

CMS is well and truly on the bench from this point.

With Lopez and Orlandi doing so well in midfield, plus Lua Lua, Buckley, then the centre of the pitch with Bridcutt, Hammond or Crofts, there is no way Gus is looking to do anything other than replace CMS up front with Ulloa. End of.

He's keeping CMS's spirits up by saying he'll be looking to fit him in as he knows what a delicate, confidence driven player he is.
