Ashley Barnes's dismissal was brought back into the spotlight
Luis Suarez has been told his bite of an opponent was a “significantly more serious” offence than Ashley Barnes’ attempt to trip a referee.
The FA regulatory commission, which suspended the Liverpool star for ten games, looked at Barnes’ red card at Bolton as an example of an incident where a ban longer than the usual three matches was imposed.
They decided Suarez’s offence – a bite of Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic – was “significantly more serious than that of Ashley Barnes and, accordingly, the punishment should be significantly higher.”
Barnes was banned for six games for the incident involving ref Nigel Miller. An extra match was automatically added as it was his second dismissal of the season.
