James pleads for England reprieve

James takes blame for defeat
Eriksson fumes after defeat
Denmark 4-1 England
David James is urging England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson to give him the opportunity to make up for his nightmare showing against Denmark.
The Manchester City goalkeeper admitted to be under-prepared after the 4-1 defeat in Copenhagen on Wednesday.

"I just want to be able to have the chance to put it straight," he said.

"I'm looking forward to having another go and making sure everything I do next time is 100 per cent spot-on. It's a learning curve for me at 35."

James came on as a second-half substitute against Denmark with the game still goalless.

He was at fault with the first goal and looked ill at ease throughout the 45 minutes he was on the pitch as England suffered their heaviest defeat under Eriksson.

I spoke the truth which obviously wasn't taken the right way

David James

James accepted his share of the blame but was subsequently pilloried for admitting he had not prepared properly for the friendly international.

"I spoke the truth which obviously wasn't taken the right way on one occasion or wasn't necessarily interpreted the right way in another. That's not my problem," he said.

"But I'm a stickler for doing things right - that's why I've got a psychologist on board - and for once I didn't.

"The performance showed that. As a professional, for me that's not acceptable.

"I rant and rave at youngsters to do things right and I didn't do it myself.

"The one thing I must say is that at no stage did I belittle it because it was a friendly. It was just fortunate it was a friendly and not a qualifying game.

If given the opportunity again, there is no way I won't be right or ready

David James

"Will it wreck my World Cup hopes? I've been honest. It's up to people what they want to make of it - but it will never happen again."

James must now wait to see if he will be given a reprieve by the England coach during the World Cup qualifiers with Wales and Northern Ireland next month.

"I'll play my games for Manchester City. We've got two more before the squad is announced and my preparation process will be the same, to win games, play well and, if selected, ready to go," he said.

"Representing your country is the highest honour you can have and if given the opportunity again, there is no way I won't be right or ready."

He has had how many chances? he should not even be in the squad anymore - call up Carson instead of him he is a joke.

Call up Carson. Or Kirkland. Or Green. Or Martyn. etc.

I'm not defending James's performance at all, but what he said was taken out of context by the press. He ain't bright, a bit like when Beckham claimed he got a yellow card deliberately.

But we should be looking to the future.
If it was the World Cup final, Paul Robinson gets injured, who would you rather have Nigel Martyn who is proven and reliable or Scott Carson because we're looking to the future?

Not that I'm particularly in favour of calling up Martyn anyway, just rather him then James.

James should have been ditched ages ago - but as-ever SG-E is incapable of making a positive decision, his approach to team selection seems to look at "public opinion" (flick thru the Sun sports pages) and then chooses his mates again and adds a few extra guys who got a mention in the Sun - he just goes with the flow.

Just what does SG-E have to do to get the sack ffs ??? He brings a whole new meaning to the word "incompetant".

He's the England Manager who is neither English or is able to manage - he should be sacked and replaced with an English Manager who has passion and can sort out the prima-donnas that comprise the England Football Team Squad.

Step forward Stan Alardyce, Harry Rednapp, that-bloke-that-manages-Charlton, Ian Hollaway (sp?), the-Wigan-manager etc etc (NOT the Middlesborough manager - he's failed to have any impression on SG-E and is just a clone by now)

Rather an english manager who really tries and has passion and pride, than SG-E who is just going thru the motions (as we have seen time and time again.....), has no imagination, no tactical ability AND NO BLOODY PASSION ABOUT ENGLISH FOOTBALL

And that, old son, is why you should NEVER represent England ever again. If you're still on a "learning curve" at 35, then god help us.

I've never been able to take James seriously even in the early days when he was so over-hyped at Watford. Raphael Meade made him look very silly in the closing stages of a game at Vicaridge Rd, when James did one of his trademark brainless dashes off his line, got there second, and allowed Meade to dink it over him and into the gaping net. 1-0 win for the Albion thankyouverymuch David.

Stick to modelling, you big hunk.

In fairness to Erikssen it is only recently that a glutton of good young English keepers have come through.

I for one would have rather had James in the squad then Richard Wright or Ian Walker.

BUT now there are viable options he should be ditched onto the international scrapheap.
