Hammers move for Johnson snubbed

Dowie determined to keep Johnson
Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan has turned down West Ham's £5.5m bid for star striker Andy Johnson.
The 24-year-old has been a long-term target of the Hammers but their official approach to sign him in January has been dismissed by Jordan.

"West Ham have been on but Andy Johnson is not for sale," Jordan was quoted as saying in the Daily Mail.

"I turned down £9m in the summer so why would I sell him for £5.5m? Money is irrelevant no matter what they offer."

In the summer, Palace rejected offers from Tottenham, Everton, Birmingham and West Brom for the England striker.

Johnson has since signed a new five-year contract to stay at Selhurst Park and Jordan admits he is vital to their push for a Premiership return.

Katan isn't the striker we were hoping to get in the summer window - and still are hoping to get

West Ham boss Alan Pardew

"Andrew is an integral part of the team and he is staying at my football club," said Jordan.

"The reality is I need him to score the goals that will get us promoted."

While Johnson seems certain to stay put at Palace for the time being, West Ham boss Alan Pardew revealed he is still looking to bring a high-profile striker to Upton Park.

Despite signing Israel international Yaniv Katan, Pardew wants another quality striker to boost a strikeforce that already includes Teddy Sheringham, Marlon Harewood and Bobby Zamora.

"This isn't the striker we were hoping to get in the summer window - and still are hoping to get," admitted Pardew.

"Katan is one that just fell for me really but I made it clear he will not get an automatic start here."
