I went to this Champions League qualifying game in Split on Wednesday, and there are two points to be made about it.
Firstly, Zsombor Kerekes scored AGAIN and will be playing against Man Utd at Old Trafford next week in the 3rd qualifying round. Looked very decent and I really think we missed out there.
Secondly, and more importantly, when Debrecen scored their 3rd goal of the game (to make it 6-0 on agg), a huge section of Split fans rans around one of the stands behind the goal, tried to push a fence down, but were held back by riot police the other side of it. They then threw missiles over it and began to build bonfires out of seats.
At the same time, a flare was thrown into the away section (which I was in with a Hungarian friend). The police did nothing to control the crowd whatsoever, but waited for it to 'fizzle out'.
Is this a regular event in eastern European football? It wouldn't suprise me.
Now, I very much doubt that the authorities at FIFA and UEFA will even hear about these events, let alone do anything about them. If any of this happened in England, I presume the involved club(s) would be banned from European football for several years.
