Oh we do, I quite agree. I was really highlighting the anti homophobic stance the stewards take up there, plus how other fans see their own stewards.

Plus the guy was being a muppet.

Its a thankless task, akin to being a Traffic Warden!

In fairness, Gus is probably the most famous person they have seen on the Wirral since Will Young opened the new Borders bookshop there in 2007.
They were bound to get a bit overexcited.

This can't be true. The Wirral wouldn't have a bookshop surely.

Hi Guys,

Tranmere Fan in peace.

Our Stewards seriously adopt a "no sh1t" policy. They kick more of us out the ground than the away fans every week. Usually for very minor offences.

Half of the Johnny King Stand by the away fans (On the left as you looked) has been closed all season as so many times last year, small groups of lads were provoked into responding to away fans and ended up being rejected. When you are playing the likes of Oldham, Leeds etc who fill the away end, its easy to go for the minoritory.

Seriously. The reason why there is little atmosphere is the fear of getting chucked out. I do feel thought that Gus poyet was trying to "interact" with the crowd today, and unfortunately it didnt work. He has too much history to gain the respect of the fickle Tranmere fans.

As for "Birkenhell" you are right, its a dump, but we did have the Proclaimers here in 2007. Arent they famous?

You are joking right?

"Provoked into responding to away fans". Not being funny mate, but go to any ground in the football league (including our own) and you will always have twats right next to the away fans who give it the big one from inside the ground, and are usually first on their feet after the game has finished. Nothing about being provoked at all, just trying to get a reaction from the away fans in the first place, who no doubt are more than happy to oblige. While we're at it, obviously its easier to pick on the minority - similar story whenever we have a sell out at Withdean in the away end and all the opposition fans are standing, we tend to have an uproar on here from the 'singing' section who are still told to sit down.

At the end of the day, the stewards are DOING their job. Granted I think we all believe that there should be a degree of common sense when they do it, but if they play it by the book then I think its unfair that they get faulted.

It sounds as if they are determined to drive out any fun, wit, enjoyment and passion from the fans, a bit like Hebberd's Heroes at Withers.

Yup, it's the 'small ground, small crowd' syndrome, we suffer from it at Withdean. When there's only a few who want to 'support their team to the max' it's easy for the Authorities to enforce all the Regulations to ensure that it doesn't happen. When this few become a majority (usually with away fans who tend to be more of the 'maximum support' persuasion) the Authorities can't enforce the rules.

All the while you're small in number they'll pick you off. We've pretty much given up at Withdean but we're hoping that at the new ground we'll have sufficient numbers (probably in the North Stand) to be able to flaunt the regulations.

I'm struggling to believe people actually seem to be defending someone who shouted out "Gus Poyet is a Chelsea rentboy". Sounds like the twat was rightfully ejected if Gus heard it and surprisingly, didn't like it!

Ah well there's the difference between us. I'm struggling to understand how any other football fan could possibly object to that comment. What's he supposed to shout?"Gus Poyet was a great player and is a brilliant manager?" Or maybe he shouldn't have said anything at all?

There is obviously a line between banter and abuse, but as reported that, to me, falls well within the 'banter' category. I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just saying it's the difference between old school fans and the modern "sit down and don't say anything rude" brigade.

If Poyet was racially abused it would be against the law. Homophobic abuse is equally against the law. It comes under Hate Crime legislation.
The Tranmere fan was lucky that he wasn't arrested by police rather than just ejected by a steward.
