know everyone will say that i am only having ago at the ref because Oldham lost but this was a disgrace and i don't really care. The referee for todays Oldham v Brighton game was described by five live as erratic and the penalty described as dubious. This is a serious understatement. The penalty came about when a Brighton player attempted to cross the ball and failed quite miserably. The cross went high over the bar and the closest it got to a Latics player was about 2 ft(I should no as i had the best view of this and the penalty decision from the lookers stand). Some how the linesman gave a corner?!?!?! From said corner Brighton played it short and again they attempted to cross it. Forunately it hit an Oldham player who was little more than a yard or 2 away. The Oldham player turned his back and it hit him on his forearm as he turned. This forearm was infact against his body as well. To my amazement and just about everyone else in the grounds a penalty was awarded. It was one of the worst penalty decisions i have ever seen. The fact that it came from a corner that was given for no reason made it even worse. Brighton scored from the resulting penalty.
The second goal came about from another corner given for seemingly no reason by the same linesman. The corner was a poor one and it went out for an Oldham throw. From this throw sheridan gave it away and Leon knight was free in the area to head home. This would never have happened if it wasnt for the poor corner decision. It should have been a goalkick and therefore the ball would have been cleared. I mean how can u get a corner from your own player blazing a shot into the stands?!?!?!

2-0 to the referee echoed around the ground and other abusive chants were also in full flow. The referee left the pitch at half time to chorus of boo's and the obvious songs. He was also escorted by a policeman. Dowie could be seen walking over to him to have a word. This is possibly the angriest i have ever been at a football match and i have been pretty bad in other games.

THE REST OF THE POST IS UNDERNEATH AS THE MODERATORS REMOVE POSTS THAT ARE LONG AND MEANINGFUL. HAHAHAHA I BEAT THE SYSTEM! [reply] [Complain about this post]

In the second half he didnt make so many obvious blunders apart from the fact he couldnt see the Brighton forward pushing defenders and generally making a nusance of himself in the wrong way ( pushing players away when they tackled him etc). This player was wisely substituted by the Brighton manager as he could have and maybe should have gone had there been a stricter referee. Also he didnt seem to have any knowledge of advantages when an Oldham player was brought down and we had to go back into our own half from being near the edge of the area. ALSO, he didnt seem to have any concept of high footing. On top of this we had a penalty claim turned down when it hit a Brighton defneder OUT STRETCHED arm. The linesman for the Brighton defence seemed pretty fair mainly. Although i was displeased when the referee gave a corner and the linesman said goal kick when he about 35 yrds from the incident looking through a crowd of players. This was about 20 yrds further away than the referee was.
As with all bad referees he did the noble thing as to give us alot of decisions in the last 10 minutes. This is a futile attempt to sway the crowd's judgement of an appalling referee. Fortunately this did not work as is the case the majority of the time. He was booed off the pitch and very cunningly sneaked off the pitch amongst the Brighton players ( Im not implying he was actually with them here).

I have to admit that the 3rd Brighton goal wasnt anything to do with this abismal referee and linesman double act. But on the whole was 3-1 a fair result?!?!?! I dont think so. Brighton on the day were no better than Oldham they just finished the chances they got.

Well done Dowie and the lads. They did fantastic. Especially to say it was a group of youngsters and last minute signings. A very promising display that deserved a point at least. Any other Oldham fans on the board hope to see u at Sheffield on Saturday.

PS. I wouldnt have written so much if i wasnt so angry about these incidents. As a result i am going to be writing a letter to the FA though it wont do much. They will probably send me their standard reply. [reply] [Complain about this post]

I can't agree more!! I'm just glad that the reason we lost was down to very very poor judgement on the ref's side & not that we were out classed! Our new lads are looking good & come to think of it did'nt we lose the opener last year.. keeping up a bad habit may pay off.. Once they settle we should see a turn around [reply] [Complain about this post]

I hope so. I personally believe this will happen as well anyway. I cant see us doing badly this season despite our abismal pre season. [reply] [Complain about this post]

Well said mate, I think you covered most of the appeals and dismal refereeing. Nothing ever changes and the referee's were against us last season and they have continued in the same vein.
Do NOT forget we lost 2men due to injury as well, Haining being the most important, Knight would not have scored if Haining was still on the pitch, his position and therefore mix up in defence not exactly knowing who should be marking and therefore with the referees help they scored the second for the referee.

I have said my piece on the referee's action in the responce to Mark Hughes' post, nothing ever changes. That man was a disgrace to his uniform and should not be refereeing. I hope action will be taken against this man, outside ajudication could be a way of punishing and if he carry's on refereeing in the same sort of form, he should be punished heavily! I didnt forget the injuries. How could I?!?! If Hainings injury is as bad as currently thought we are in a bit of trouble as we are already short of defenders with any sort of experience. Hope Killen isnt too bad as well. I didnt include the injuries because the post was mainly about my uncontrolable anger towards poor refereeing in the division. This guy was up there with the best. Maybe even knocks Clattenberg ( referee against Brentford last season) off his pedastool as worst referee! [reply] [Complain about this post]

If referees made a fraction of the number of mistakes that players make in a match, then perhaps we should have something to moan about, but they don't.
I have always accepted referees' decisions even if I don't always agree with them privately. And anyway who are we who have never refereed a match to stand on a pedestal and criticise referees?

Lets get on with things like adults and take the rough with the smooth.

For the record, I am not and never have been a referee, neither have I any close friends or relations who are referees.

I come at this from the position of a former player in a semi professonal league in the 1950s and 1960s, and also from someone who has followed football for fifty years. [reply] [Complain about this post]

I'm with you on this one, Donnelly. Referees have a thankless task to carry out but the game couldn't exist wthout them. Anyone here never had a bad day at the office? I've seen more than my fair share of bad decisions but plenty more awful performances by the highly paid folk they share the pitch with.
As you said, best to just get on with it as the bad decisions tend to even out between clubs over the course of a season. [reply] [Complain about this post]

re: REFEREE'S!?!?! CONTINUED! Adam Leech - 12th post - 9 Aug 2003 20:35
I wouldnt have anything to shout about if they werent so poor. Common sense tells you that when a Brighton player puts it over the bar it isnt their corner. And common sense tells u it isnt a penalty when a ball is drilled at u from 2 yards and it hits u in the arm which is against your body. Its not al of them. Its roughly half of them in the division that dont seem to understand simple rules like high footing or the concept of ball to hand. Its just black and white to them. And yes thank you proving me on the 'I know you think im only complaining cos we lost'. To be honest i could have gone on all day about the match but i got bored and turned my attentions to writing to the FA. [reply] [Complain about this post]

re: REFEREE'S!?!?! CONTINUED! Adam Prestwich - 1st post - 9 Aug 2003 21:45
Couldn't agree more mate - I have never seen a worse performance from a referee in the professional game. It was clear at times that none of the players could work out what he was doing! The guy totally lost control of the game - the four bookings in the second half were down to the players having no respect for him whatsoever. I think he knows full well he had a stinker, and that his man-management was appalling - will he admit this though - probably not...... On the plus side though, no disrespect intended but Brighton looked pretty average - they just took the chances they were given. We were well worth a point and the lads played their hearts out. Keep the faith. [reply] [Complain about this post]

That's football folks!

If David Ellery:tosser: hadn't given Notts County the corner which wasn't a corner they scored from in the Play-Off final, we'd be in the Premiership now.

If we caused as much fuss every time we had a bad ref last season we'd still be doing it now.

Stop whinging and get on with it.
