Gordon Greer in action last night
Proud Gordon Greer says he will remember his Scotland debut for the rest of his life after helping his nation to a clean sheet.
The Albion skipper played the full 90 minutes as then Scots drew 0-0 with the USA at Hampden Park in a friendly last night.
His performance has been well-received by the Scottish media.
Greer replaced Brighton-born Russell Martin, who has forged a decent first-choice partnership with Grant Hanley.
The Scots had a couple of alarms late on but were pleased with their overall performance – and they might have won it had the lively Craig Conway done better with a chance late in the first half.
Greer, who comes from Glasgow and played for Clyde and Kilmarnock, won his first cap just a month short of his 33rd birthday.
He said: “It was probably forgettable for a lot of people but I will remember it the rest of my life. I am delighted to have got the opportunity to play – it means everything to me.
“When you play football as a kid you dream about nights such as this and it was great. I’d waited a long time for that first cap but it was worth it.
“I reckon it was a good enough game between two good teams but it was a friendly and people who came along might go away and say ‘It was 0-0’ but I’ll remember it.
“I found out on Friday morning that I would be playing. I had an idea I would play one of the games in the double-header and it was a good one to take part in. I was ready and I wanted to enjoy it.
“It was great to keep the clean sheet and they are a good team so it was a great test.
“They have top players and someone said they are 13th in the world, so we knew it would be tough – but the boys here have been doing great too.”
