Albion captain Gordon Greer is back in training and in contention for Preston's visit to the Amex on Saturday.
But the Seagulls are taking no chances with Kazenga LuaLua's fitness and he is unlikely to feature in the matchday squad.
Greer missed Tuesday's 2-1 home win against Bristol City with a jarred knee which forced him off before half-time at Leeds last Saturday.
Boss Chris Hughton said: "Gordon trained this morning, so I think he'll be close which is a plus."
Albion missed Greer against Bristol. Lewis Dunk was given a torrid time in the centre of defence by visiting striker Jonathan Kodjia and Uwe Huenemeier alongside him was lucky not to concede a second half penalty.
Left-winger LuaLua has missed the last four matches with a groin problem.
Hughton said: "He trained this morning. I think the assessment with Kazenga will be he has been out for a period of time. We need to make sure we get it right with him.
"For anybody returning back from injury it's not just about the next game, it's about a period of time."
Any temptation to hurry LuaLua back is reduced against Preston by the return from a three-match ban of Jamie Murphy to compete with Solly March and Liam Rosenior for a wide spot, although central midfielder Beram Kayal is serving a one-match suspension.
Andrew Crofts could make his first start in over a year in place of Kayal after second half substitute appearances against Bristol and Leeds since his recovery from a second serious knee injury.
Preston, 3-0 winners at Charlton on Tuesday, welcome striker Joe Garner back from a three-match ban.
