I've gone for Some Like it Hot, which is brilliant. Nearly went for It's a Wonderfull Life, which is another film I love.

I'm going to be contraversial and go for one that wasn't even nominated for Best Film, probably because it wasn't in English

La Haine

Great movie. Won Best Director at Cannes in '95.

I've gone 2001 but as an aside:

the amazing thing about Shawshank is that the award that year went to:

wait for it

you're not going to believe this

think of a bad film

now double it

it went to

Forest Gump

I believe that Citizen Kane also failed to win Best Film.

Amazing to think that it's reckoned the best film in just about every film list since then.

Films that won best film

Out of Africa
Driving Miss Daisy
The last Lord of the Rings film (ghosts having fights with elephants)
A Beautiful Mind (which I think beat Amelie)
Chicago
Titanic (which I know beat LA Confidential
Chariots of Fire
Oliver

Films not named above that missed out:

Along with Psycho (surely not his best) every other Hitchcock film (Vertigo and Rear Window didn't even get nominated)
Jaws
All John Ford's films
Chinatown

In fairness when you look back at the winners during the late sixties and seventies (when films were good) there are some pretty damn solid movies in there: '69 Midnight Cowboy, '71 French Connection, '72 Godfather, 74 Godfather PtII, '75 One flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, '78 Deer Hunter. So a lot of classics got edged out, but all in all ....

go figure :nono:
