surely the definitive great book, great film must be "one flew over the cuckoo's nest"

other great books that made great films:

Kozinski's Being There, Hemmingway's The Old Man of the Sea, The Quiet American, The Third Man, Brighton Rock - in fact most Graham Greene adaptations are pretty damn good
