Gould leaves post at Posh
Former Wales manager Bobby Gould quit his position as Peterborough's head coach at half-time during their LDV Vans 1-0 defeat at Bristol City.

Paul Heffernan's seventh minute goal put City through, and after the match manager Barry Fry revealed his right-hand man had left the club.

"Bob told me at half-time that he didn't want to be associated with the team any longer, that was it," he said.

Peterborough are 19th in League One after a poor start to the season.

Has anyone ever heard of a coach or manager resigning in the middle of a game before?

There's never a dull moment with Barry Fry is there?

Fry: 'This is a real kick in the teeth' - 30/9/04

FOR once Barry Fry was almost lost for words.

The Posh manager has seen a variety of club coaches come and go, but not at half-time in a cup match. Bobby Gould's abrupt departure was a bizarre incident even by the standards of Fry's Posh.

To be fair to Fry he wasn't going to volunteer news of Gould's departure until eagle-eyed members of the press corps asked why the silver-haired veteran wasn't in his normal place in the dug-out after the break.

Fry said: "We had a normal half-time when points of view were exchanged, but Bobby didn't say a word. Then as we were all leaving the dressing room for the second half, Bobby just announced that he'd had enough, that he was packing in, and that he couldn't be associated with a side like that.

"I was dumb-founded. I have never had a disagreement with Bob, I applaud all that he has done for us and just this week he took two training sessions and watched our weekend opponents Torquay for us.

"There was no indication this was about to happen even though he had tried to do it before. I am devastated as I thought I had done well by him.

"Bob was living rent-free in a house I own in Peterborough, he had a well-paid two-year contract and free use of a car that I organised for him.

"I don't think I've ever had a worse month personally or professionally and this is a real kick in the teeth for me and the club, but we will bounce back."

Gould left Ashton Gate immediately after announcing his intention to quit. He was not preparing to say anything about his sudden departure, but news of Fry's comments reached him at his Bristol home – Gould's son Trevor is Commercial Manager at Bristol City.

And Gould felt the need to have a parting shot at Fry, again without naming names. Gould said: "There was an individual on the substitutes' bench who in my opinion had no right to be there, but my input again counted for nothing.

"I am very unhappy with the way things turned out because all I ever wanted was for me to help Barry and for the club to do well. I was never interested in taking Barry's job as some people have inferred."

Gould may have been referring to Fry's own son midfielder Adam Fry who made his first-team debut as a substitute last night or possibly goalkeeper Luke McShane, but Posh took the only 17 fit players available to the game – teenager Mark Coulson was the only one to miss out.

Fry is now in the not unfamiliar position of searching for another coach. He claims he already has a couple of well-known names in mind.

Fry added: "Andy Legg and John Morling will retain their positions, but one needs to concentrate on playing and the other is too inexeperienced."

The players were silent on the subject, but as one left the ground last night he described the affair as 'a shambles'.

It was hard to argue with him.

He has grown a very large eyebrow, which meets in the middle. Other than that, I'm struggling to think of his accomplishments.

Oh yeah, he made Robbie Savage look an even bigger twat than he already is once by forcing him to apologise to Paulo Maldini in a press conference once.

Didn't Adam Hinshelwood once insist that his uncle be made manager?

:lolol:
