Not that standing on the roof of the Grandstand of the Gordon Enclosure sipping Pimms & looking out over the Downs one way and a huge chunk of West sussex by the sea the other way doesn't beat sitting in an airless office in foxy pucken Slough every time - but...

- there was a dozen non-runners cos of the good/soft going
- the handicaps (big surprise there) were all magically reduced to fifteen runners, thereby saving the bookies paying out on fourth place
- the Sussex Stakes was won by a 20/1 rag, the highest price winner since 1963
- the placepot was twelve hundred quid
- there was a 100/1 place in a nine runner race
- Zuhair didn't even get a place in the race named after it

All in all, it was like pin-sticking on the all-weather.

Shame.
First Sussex stakes I've missed for ages.
Sometimes racing is just for the day out and Goodwood is great value for that.
I would have happily swopped places.
Still may get there Friday or Saturday.

They were saying at the course that all the other jockeys applauded him in after he'd won - top bloke! It'll be the end of an era when P.Eddery retires at the end of the season. Or rather it WOULD be the end of an era, if only George Duffield didn't show every sign of keeping on keeping on til he's eighty five or something. Weird how Frankie's gone off the boil this season tho. He was just making up the numbers today.
