Why do people say good luck to people getting married? What actually can go wrong, that you would need luck to try and combat? I'm sure all the ridiculous scenarios that crop up in soap operas don't actually happen in real life. It's surely just a happy day from start to finish, so isn't it a bit like wishing someone good luck for Christmas or their birthday?

What could go wrong? Plenty of things; food could be shit, weather could be shit, one of you might faint at the altar (if you both make it there), could be a mass family brawl, to name but a few things which could go wrong on the event which is a one-off (well, hopefully) and will have cost you in the region of £20k.

It is acknowledging the fact that 2 people are committing themselves to each other for the rest of their lives which will require, amongst many other things, an element of luck. What else would you wish for them, other than congratulations and happiness?
