Will the real Gomez please stand up? The one we were told about last year.

Huge excitement prior to arrival. Phil Vickery amongst others in media describing as one of the best players in S.America, how have Brighton done it again etc. NSC was positively dribbling - more than Mitoma - about his every touch when he first started appearing from sub bench.

And yet he doesn’t usually start. And when he comes on, he has had some incredible misses (so he fits in well here, granted!) like today when it’s easier to score. And hasn’t exactly dictated or dominated play.

Is he just another that will be out on loan in the Championship or a relegation bound side soon enough? Or is the boy going to come good, and if so, when? Because I’m just not feeling or seeing the hyperbole. Next season be different?

The rugby player?! Didn't have him down as an authority on South American players!

:lolol:

Have you learned nothing from our previous South American imports? Give the lad time, it's a complete culture change, both on and off the pitch.

I’ve learned can go either way, hence thread. Be nice if he could stick a sitter or two in the net, hence concern some may have over egged his arrival because so far that part of his game at least is poor. Maybe I’ve answered my own question. The hyperbole was ridiculous and people got way too excited too soon.

He started the comeback last week - without that dream ball to Gruda, the grinning lighthouse keeper would still be haunting our dreams

I think he's good. Just mistimed a header. Absolutely bizarre that he gets grief while O'Riley walks the pitch.

I think he’s not above ‘grief’ (your choice of word) for his miss today if so. As for O’Riley, there are other threads on him. We can keep this one to discuss Gomez :)

Sorry, Phil McNulty! :) A senior moment
The irony of you making a mistake when starting a thread about, er, someone making a mistake!

Did you meet not mean TIM Vickery? Y'know, the South American football expert?

This guy

That’s the one! Getting my Tims and Phil’s mixed up. Or was it Phil Ligget? Not sure. Anyway thanks for looking up, I couldn’t be arsed. Knew someone would and you’ve that honour :)

Let's not scapegoat a player for missing one chance for the 5 mins he was on the pitch.

Every player misses chances.

I'll judge him when he has longer match day minutes, but so far he looks like someone with real potential. He's definitely done well in other games.

Let's not forget Newcastle's position in the league at the end of the season, makes them a better side than us. We got a draw and players like Gomez have held their own against these sort of teams and he only joined us in Jan!

Onwards and upwards.

Nobodies scapegoating him. I do however believe the hyperbole some on here are guilty of adding to hasn’t helped. Hence thread. After today’s performance, I’m resetting expectations and ignoring it all. Instead, I’m going by what I’ve seen. That he’s more than likely to miss easy chances (like everyone else), maybe contribute an occasional worldie, probably won’t start more than he does next season (as he gets up to speed, which every player we ever sign needs at least 1-2 seasons for frustratingly), won’t stand a chance of really dictating games without others around him becoming significantly better and if he ever does come good…will probably be off in the first transfer window to Chelsea no doubt!! ;) But isn’t that the Albion way, so we must suck it up.
