The Pet Shop Boys will collect the Outstanding Contribution to Music award at next year's Brit awards. Ged Doherty, Chairman of the Brits committe stated "...Neil and Chris have produced a fantastic body of work with songs that truly were the soundtrack to a whole generation's lives"

The question is what do the fine people of NSC make of the Arsenal loving duo? pop or pap - the decision is yours.

Outstanding contribution to music?...you/they are having a laugh..the lead singer sounds like a poor man's Al Stewart

Is anyone gonna hold their hand up to finding their songs the soundtrack of their youth???

Hmm, I loved them at the time, still like them but don't think their body of work quite merits an Outstanding Contribution To Music award.

In terms of the "soundtrack to a generation" thing only West End Girls comes close. It was a definitive mid-80s track and evokes that period, but PSB don't do for the 80s what T-Rex / Bowie do for the 70s or the Beatles / Stones do for the 60s.

I'd say the 80s divide into 2 - the early period of synth pop where Duran Duran defined that period, and late 80s post-Live Aid which was Stock Aitken and Waterman and stadium rock like Simple Minds, U2, Queen.

This looks not so much 'jobs for the boys' as 'bums for the chums'.
