Bad news for England: Gerrard out for two months
Report: Man Utd 2-1 Liverpool
Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard will be out of action for two months after breaking a bone in his foot.
Gerrard limped off before half-time during the Reds defeat at Manchester United on Monday and X-rays confirmed he has broken the fifth metatarsal.
The lay-off will see Gerrard miss England's World Cup qualifiers against Wales and Azerbaijan next month.
The 24-year-old will also miss six Premiership games and three Champions League encounters for Liverpool.
Gerrard will miss both games against Deportivo La Coruna as well as the trip to Olympiakos.
"Xabi Alonso played the ball to me and I caught my foot in the turf," explained Gerrard.
We have a big squad and we will have to cope without him
Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez
"I don't know what happened really but I was all on my own.
"I will try to remain positive whatever happens."
Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez said after Monday's game: "There was no-one near him - he just jarred his foot.
"It is a blow because we have some big games in Europe coming up.
"But we have a big squad and we will have to cope without him.
"We have Dietmar Hamann and Xabi Alonso, and they both played well at Old Trafford.
"I hope that Salif Diao and Igor Biscan can also play well, we do have options and other possibilities."
Gerrard has become the third England player - after David Beckham, Gary Neville and Wayne Rooney - to fall victim to a broken metatarsal.
