Thank you so much for the kind words and thought, I have to say that after coming to terms with our situation and a couple of setbacks we are now happily ensconced in Eastbourne, bought a tumbledown property and have spent the past seven/eight years completely renovating it which if I’m honest, being engrossed in diy has helped my mental health greatly. Best advice I have for anyone else who are or is going to go through depression etc is to never look back and push oneself to do things every day, as it’s so easy to lay down feeling sorry for yourself, that’s the way it gets you but fight it and don’t back down, just keep in mind that there are sunnier times around the corner. Thanks again.
Thanks for this and your other posts on this thread. Best of luck.

You'd think that being fooled by Farage once would be enough for anyone.
Most would feel that once would be way too much.

Obviously folk can't get enough of the man of the people (as long as they are white and not foreign (apart from his wife and kids of course)) shit.

The bloke is a shyster and anyone that votes for him is a gullible fool.

My friend’s son is standing for Labour in Camborne and Redruth…

… my friend’s wife (not the candidate’s mother) has decided she’s supporting Reform.

Must be some interesting family discussions. 😲
Ah, damn good chance there now Eustace has stood down. I voted for the Labour candidate there in 2019, but boundary changes have moved me into the St Ives seat this time. Good luck to him.

My parents paid for that through NI and I will have been paying for NHS healthcare since I started earning money. Have YOU paid any extra for what you get which is exactly what I am entitled to and have paid for anyway? Weak argument, as if I have private medical insurance I am paying twice, and getting taxed on the private part.
Feel free to ring The Nuffield on a Sunday at 11pm when you're having a stroke and see if they can help.

As someone that has had PMI via a number of employers, I've never begrudged paying 'twice'. Equally, two of my children went to private primary school - once again didn't mind paying twice.

A vast majority of parents that send their children to private school can well afford the addition of VAT.

At the end of the day it's a choice - use the private sector and pay twice or use the state sector and don't pay twice.

Agree it is a choice to go private in whatever capcity, but also it shouldn't be a mindset of paying twice given all our contributions are for society as a whole, not just for individual access.

There are many people that don't have children, but they need everyone else's kids to be educated. There are plenty of people who don't drive or don't use our roads, but they contribute taxes to roads because society needs them. Many people don't even really need to use the NHS, but others do so we all contribute.

For those worried about Farage, this is what happens when he comes up against a proper politician.

Not sure if it's been mentioned before but judging by some of the behaviour of England fans in Germany, if England progress to the quarter finals, would that be a dent in the number of votes Farage and his motley crew will get??

Not mentioned as England fans have behaved exceptionally . As per chief of police over there . 1 arrest only

Media mentioning boris today . That’s a bit like bringing on Adam Johnston to try and win you a losing game

Surely vehicle tax and the vast sums raised by fuel duty and VAT on petrol/diesel pay for the roads with some left over ? Non-drivers won't pay this.

You were not the only one to take a hit,
My wife being Irish wanted to return to her country of birth after spending her life here from age 4, worked and paid into our health service throughout her working life, after thinking about it for years we decided to take the plunge, after all what could go wrong ? we sold our home in Brighton and found what we planned as our forever home in county Wexford, then to my dismay discovered that Cameron whilst initiating his austerity measures had quietly taken away the reciprocated health service for those who wished to live in Ireland whereby up until 2012 anyone leaving these shores to reside in Ireland had the benefit of receiving health care free at the point of delivery just as if they lived here in the UK. This was one austerity measure not publicised but imposed which came as a shock to me, here I was heading for retirement with plenty of health problems which were no longer covered by the NHS so in effect would have to take out private health care after we both had paid into the system here all our lives. Then to top it all along came Brexit, would I still be able to receive my worked for state pension when it became due when I was no longer living in the state ? There were so many challenges being bandied around at the time and I found myself constantly worrying what would happen, how would we cope if either of us became ill and required hospital care, how would we survive etc, our dream became a nightmare and I suffered what I now know as a breakdown of sorts! we managed to sell our ‘forever’ home and scurried back to the UK very soon after the referendum vote when my worst tears had become reality.
The financial implications in reversing our decision to emigrate meant we were in the position to not be able to afford to buy in Brighton as property values had leapt ahead while we were away so had to settle for a much cheaper area than we had previously resided but the mental anguish I suffered due to our life plan being possibly crippled by Brexit, now reversed and being back home was worth taking the hit for.
A tough read. I wish you all the best.

Judging by the way England played on Sunday I don’t think this will happen.

No, not by a long shot. New roads and road maintenance come out of general taxation and local taxes.

road spending is about £11bn. https://www.statista.com/statistics...-uk-public-sector-expenditure-national-roads/
fuel duty alone is £25bn. https://www.statista.com/statistics/284323/united-kingdom-hmrc-tax-receipts-fuel-duty/
with VED on top £7bn. https://commonslibrary.parliament.uk/research-briefings/sn01482/

road users pay 3:1 over spending on the roads, we really shouldn't be dealing with potholes. one of the biggest unanswered questions, how this will be replaced as we transition to EV, no mention of inevitable road pricing in this election.

EV’s and hybrids will be taxed heavily eventually, shirley. And/or per mile taxation.
