A not very illuminating BBC article BBC Sport - Gay footballers would be accepted - Gareth Southgate which nonetheless got me thinking - it can't be far off that a current or recently retired footballer comes out; as a straight bloke, I'd be chuffed if it was a Brighton (ex)player.

To be honest I don't give it any thought normally, but it would change football's society and to think that perhaps the catalyst came from our club in a town with 'Pride'.... it would be a source of pride indeed in years to come.

To be honest, it would only reinforce the stereotype for most of the idiots until more of them started coming out. I'd rather it was for a club like Millwall, Burnley, etc first.

When Gullys Group were introduced against Bolton. Everyone around me was saying oh they must be faggots and mimicking gay people like floppy hands etc. And we're meant to be a gay friendly city. Unfortunately can't see a footballer coming out in near future.

Is there another football club with specific homosexual connotations?

If not, then we have to bear that torch.

Yes, Manchester City have specifically targeted the gay population in God's own city as a mean's of extending the fan base and creating a more tolerant atmosphere at games.

One day, people will be pleased for their children when they come out as being gay,

really, why?

wouldn't it be better society is indifferent, that a child doesnt need to "come out"?

Saved me typing it.

''Well done son, now at least I know I wont have any Grand children.''

EDIT: Though I do not see what a man does in the privacy of his own bedroom with a consenting adult would affect what he does on the pitch

I think Rooney should come out, or John Terry... if it was a Brighton player it would just reinforce the sterotype other teams have of you. As a Palace supporter I rather we hate you lot because you support BHAFC rather than because you have a high gay population. You also have a high veggie/ green population and I wouldn't think it was acceptable if Palace supporters stero-typed you under that heading. I used to live in Brighton & am veggie/ green myself so in a sense I'm biased. The Palace/ Brighton rivialry goes back futher than gay or any other group moving to the area. We hate you simply because you're Brighton & used to be in Hove Albion. You hate use simply because you'll never be as good ;-)
Saying all this I'll still sing the song you hate tomorrow, simply because you have so many of you get offended...

Brighton - In your face
Unfortunately there are too many idiot fans and footballers for someone to come out safely. Sad but that's 'football'. 25 years ago black footballers were berated by large sections of the crowd, at least the game has progressed so much there's now headlines for individual incidences. Maybe in another 25 there'll be headlines outing homophobic twats. One can only hope.
