I was terribly saddened by the news of Speed's passing just as everyone was, but it just makes me wonder what happened for him to commit suicide, with his job going well and with no news of any family problems, to hang yourself(possibly being the worst kind of suicide to commit) it seems such a shock, i hope that it was not down to an individual or an act that made him do this. We have truly lost a legend <3

Why? is the most baffling question about this sad occurence. Something catastrophic in his personal life? Maybe - can't think of anything else, but not going to start speculating now. Maybe in time we'll know why.

Rumours on Twitter that one of the tabloids were about to "out" him.

I'm not buying this one just yet, I think that's just something that's been started by one of those people who already have an agenda against the Sun.

If something like that was the case, why would he not just get one of these Uber-Mega-Ultra-Injunctions, like everyone else connected with football seems to do?

The tabloids will try and dig for dirt but at the moment all I feel is sadness for Gary Speed's family and the funeral will be an incredibly emotional thing to go through for everyone that attends which will be huge. Get that out of the way first before malicious rumours spread on twitter, facebook or anywhere else.

We're all wondering why he did it but as someone else said in another thread, it's none of other people's business. I'm sure in time the reason will emerge.

Cheshire Cat

The most curious thing..
This is all just going round and round in circles and getting nowhere. BBC and other media don't seem to have stopped it all day, and nobody has anything new to say, so just give it a rest.

I would suggest it might not have been started by someone with an agenda, just idle speculation that got picked up, or that several people suggested and it's all snowballed, like a lot of things do on twitter.

Too late, there were thousands of tweets yesterday along the lines of "there's rumours that xxx newspaper was about to publish the news that Gary Speed was xxxxx".

Yes, you SPIVS. There are rumours because you're SPREADING them

There's a conspiracy theory doing the rounds, if you can call it that, that people were misspelling Gary Speed's Christian name and causing 'Gay Speed' to trend on Twitter/Google whatever it is and thus starting a massive rumour. Wouldn't surprise me considering Margaret Thatcher's death was prematurely called last week because some old biddy with the same name died in a car crash.

Fair enough, but I've already seen plenty of people hashtagging #dontbuytheSun, usually accompanied by some kind of definitive statement that it was responsible for Gary Speed's death.

Now I never buy the thing, but not because I think it's evil, or because of some principled stance relating to the Hillsborough disaster. Just because it's shit. I don't need some halfwit teenager on Twitter telling me which newspapers I should or shouldn't buy, because they've heard what basically amounts to a modern version of village gossip about Speed.

WTF We all hate media intrusion, we despise the journo's and their tactics and most of us say it's the individuals business not ours ... Doesn't stop you lot speculating though, does it? Nice attempt to dress it up as an informed debate about twitter though FFS.

Could you confirm why you hope it's not true? It almost sounds like you hope he wasn't gay/bi-sexual...

Because I hope the British press would not stoop to such so levels to cause the death of such a great footballer a sorry don't get your point ?

I really hate this, a terrible thing has happened and a wife and 2 children are devastated so leave it be.
