How do I add someone to buy tickets on their behalf? I have the fan number etc but it won't let me add them.

I think they have to add you to their account as well for it to work.

You have to do it through their account currently you are just adding yourself to theirs. Took me a while to work it out as well.

You need to do it both ways:
they have to add you to their list so that they allow you to buy for them
they have to be on you on your list so that you are able to buy for them
