Forster: Give Slade more time

NICKY Forster has demanded more time for Albion manager Russell Slade to improve the team’s fortunes.

The club captain has urged the board not to act on impulse following Saturday’s 2-0 setback against Oldham at Withdean, which has dropped the Seagulls back into the League One relegation zone.

Albion’s fifth home defeat out of seven was greeted with boos by some fans in the South Stand but Forster insisted: “All managers need time. I’ve made no secret of my backing for the gaffer, I think he’s a top guy.

“I know a large percentage of the squad feels the same, he just needs that time to get things right.

“We are not performing as well as we should as a group but, if you look at all managers, sometimes that knee-jerk reaction is not what you need.

“If you change the manager it’s going to be another settling in and transitional period and I don’t think that is productive for the team at all.

“Most people are buying into what he is doing and it’s just a case of finding that little bit of consistency and form and pushing up the league. I’m sure we’ll do it."

Slade described the supporters' reaction as “very understandable”. He said: “The fans have been absolutely terrific. They have seen by and large we have put in a shift and things have not happened.

“It can’t go on, obviously. We need to be turning things around and quickly. We are not where we want to be and we have got to do something about it.

“We are not going to walk or run away from it, we are going to do something about it."

Slade, who saved Albion from relegation last season, added: “I have done over 400 games now. It's not where I want to be. More than ever I want to be successful at this club.

“Things aren’t quite going our way at this moment in time but you have got to be strong enough to turn things around. If I wasn’t strong enough, we wouldn'’t be in this league, would we.”

Glenn Murray is available after suspension for this Saturday’s home game against Hartlepool. Nigerian trialist Amodou Abdullei has returned to Germany following two appearances for Albion’s reserves.

Amodou Abdullei not signing either.

This story is almost not worth running. The only thing more predictable than a player saying the manager deserves more time, is that when he has been sacked, they all rush to say he wasn't that great and the new bloke is superb.

Large percentage of the squad? so does that mean we have some who are not in Team RS?

Forster has probably without realising hit the nail on the head why we are so poor atm, as stated above,a large percentage ? ? the whole squad should be behind the manager not some or nearly all of them,if forster knows there are players there that couldnt give a f*** surely slade does too and its up to him to ship them off to torquay.

Once again Forster speaking the truth. The thing about another manager comign in and bringing a new false dawn is very truthful from a player who is an intelligent football guy.

TCB - are you still Slade in?

As LABHA says the thing that does concern me is that he says a 'large percentage of the squad', whereas the usual platitude in these circumstances is to say something like "All the lads are 100% behind the gaffer."

I know Forster's a bit more literate than your average pro, and I know that people out-of-favour may not speak too highly of the manager, but I find his choice of words a bit worrying. Does it imply that Slade is beginning to lose the dressing room?

Giving the manager more time is all very well from the players perspective..there is usually a feeling of guilt, that they have let him down and they want more time to put things right.
The trouble is, the fans ( the paying customers ) don't see it that way.
Football is a short term game, results are everything and we aren't getting them. Some fans talk about a clear improvement from last season but results don't suggest this.
2008 / 09....played 14 points 16
2009 / 10....played 14 points 13

Sitting on scaffolding, on cheap plastic seats, in all weathers, paying 40-50% more than most clubs charge at this level and watching an unacceptable standard of football does not give me patience.
I have had enough of Withdean, of losing regularly at home and the complete lack of passion and enthusiasm from home fans. It is a sad indictment, when fans are sitting back quietly waiting for the inevitable.
Players never take enough responsibility...they make mistake after mistake and yet it is always the manager who carries the can.
RS has chopped and carved this squad about to find a new blend but he now has to face up to the unpalatable truth that quite a number of ' survivors ' from previous regimes are not good enough.
At the moment, this looks more like a Div.2 squad than a Championship squad.

But from my limited experience ( 2 away games this season, audio commentary & TV clips ) I would say that it seems where we have dropped points some games could have gone in our favour. However last season we never really looked like we were going to win the games we lost.

Also a couple of extra wins at this stage would put us comfortably up the league and nobody talking of disaster.
