NICKY Forster has demanded more time for Albion manager Russell Slade to improve the team’s fortunes.
The club captain has urged the board not to act on impulse following Saturday’s 2-0 setback against Oldham at Withdean, which has dropped the Seagulls back into the League One relegation zone.
Albion’s fifth home defeat out of seven was greeted with boos by some fans in the South Stand but Forster insisted: “All managers need time. I’ve made no secret of my backing for the gaffer, I think he’s a top guy.
“I know a large percentage of the squad feels the same, he just needs that time to get things right.
“We are not performing as well as we should as a group but, if you look at all managers, sometimes that knee-jerk reaction is not what you need.
“If you change the manager it’s going to be another settling in and transitional period and I don’t think that is productive for the team at all.
“Most people are buying into what he is doing and it’s just a case of finding that little bit of consistency and form and pushing up the league. I’m sure we’ll do it."
Slade described the supporters' reaction as “very understandable”. He said: “The fans have been absolutely terrific. They have seen by and large we have put in a shift and things have not happened.
“It can’t go on, obviously. We need to be turning things around and quickly. We are not where we want to be and we have got to do something about it.
“We are not going to walk or run away from it, we are going to do something about it."
Slade, who saved Albion from relegation last season, added: “I have done over 400 games now. It's not where I want to be. More than ever I want to be successful at this club.
“Things aren’t quite going our way at this moment in time but you have got to be strong enough to turn things around. If I wasn’t strong enough, we wouldn'’t be in this league, would we.”
Glenn Murray is available after suspension for this Saturday’s home game against Hartlepool. Nigerian trialist Amodou Abdullei has returned to Germany following two appearances for Albion’s reserves.
Amodou Abdullei not signing either.
