In the 1980 finals Italy played 3 games in the league stage, only scored 1 goal (against us) and still qualified (they conceded 0). What a tournament that must have been.

Indeed. Until this Tournament our record at 'foreign' finals (excluding 1996 which was at home reads: P=14, W=3, D=3, L=8, F=13, A=19. This is the first time we've qualified from Group stage at a 'foreign' Euro.

I hadn't realised until I looked that in the 70s not only did we fail to qualify for the 74 and 78 World Cups but also the 76 Euros. I must have successfully blanked it from my memory as we were truly awful during the 70s. The more you look at our record in International competiton the more you realise that 1966 was an aberration - a bit like Wimbledon winning the FA Cup. I hope the current success, even if we don't win this time, is the start of a genuinely fruitful period for England and not another flash in the pan.

There were only 4 teams in the FINALS (as opposed to 16). They all had to win their Groups to qualify, our group was the old Home International Championship. Also what with Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union still intact there were a lot fewer nations in those days!

PS - I didn't realise that Scotland's 'World Cup' win in 1967 was actually a Euro qualifier! They won and they still didn't qualify!

For once, I am hopeful. Despite all the criticism by a misguided few on this forum, we've actually got a decent manager, whereas in the past we didn't. And he has been here for four years already, the stability that we need to nurture the talent and develop the team.

Italy also did that in the 1970 World Cup.

Although they did make up for it by going on to score 4 goals in a thrilling next two games, including a legendary semi-final...
