England fans are braced for the outcome of a scan that will determine whether striker Wayne Rooney can play at the World Cup finals in Germany.

Rooney, 20, will return from England's base near Baden-Baden on Wednesday for a scan on his fractured metatarsal.

The scan is scheduled to take place in Manchester early in the afternoon.

If doctors from Manchester United and England are happy with the result then Rooney will return to Germany to continue his rehabilitation.

Depends what doctor he's attached to I'd imagine. If they've done all the other scans there what's the point of going somewhere in Germany when you can get back to Manchester in a couple of hours?

I would guess partly because all the previous stuff has been done by the Manchester Utd medical team.

Also I suspect Utd have insisted that as he is their player they do it as any long term damage will cost them.

Imagine the scenario if it wasn't a Man U doctor. He gets the ok to play and breaks down again next week with a 4 month lay-off - there would be a few high priced law suits flying around.

According to the paper this morning, if the Utd doctor, Tony Gill and the England docter, Leif Sward cannot agree on the scan results, a FIFA appointed independant doctor will have the final say on Rooney's fitness.

Therefore it happens at "their" hospital.

I just wonder if they are coughing up for the private jet.
