When the Murray saga began at the end of the season, I was confused and depressed. How could he even contemplate going to another club when we have so much going for us? Great manager, great chairman, great new ground.... what could anyone offer that could top that? The perfect season was somehow sullied, and then worse..... one of the heroes of this historic season was rumoured to be joining our arch rivals. It was a real kick in the teeth and made me feel the insult was deliberate.
As I read the inevitable furious backlash from fellow fans, it didn't make me feel any better and I decided not to participate.
Then I remembered what Gus had said about the ethos at the club, whose immense achievements this season have been built primarily on team spirit rather than individual 'star quality'. I remembered too how Swindon fans reacted towards Gordon Greer's defection at the start of te season (including reference to Gr££r and claiming he was a Judas). But I found it curiously satisfying that Swindon wanted to keep a player who we were signing!
So the real points are: firstly we could not maintain our team spirit with someone who could not share it with us - so it was much better that he go; second, our shock and anger is a pleasure to our fiercest rivals - so shouldn't we just stop giving them the satisfaction!!
