The use of the past tense worries me here.....

TIGERS CAN DO A 'BRIGHTON'

09:30 - 02 September 2003

Hull City's new goalkeeper Michel Kuipers today tipped his former boss Peter Taylor to take the Tigers all the way to the First Division.

Kuipers, who has joined City on a month's loan, was a member of the Brighton squad which won the Third and Second Division championships in successive seasons.

Taylor was responsible for the second of those successes and Kuipers was his first choice keeper.

Now, the big Dutch ace believes City have every chance of following in Brighton's footsteps.

Kuipers told the Mail: "Hull is a club which I'm sure will win promotion this season. Everything is geared up for it and everything is in place.

"I've seen most of the players in the squad and I think people should be very positive about the season.

"I was at Brighton when we won the Third Division and then the Second Division. You look at Hull and have got to say they've got an excellent chance of doing the same."

Apart from possessing impressive players, Kuipers revealed he thinks City have the spirit to win promotion.

He added: "The team spirit here is very good. The players work for each other and that something you can't buy. You either have it or you don't. I've seen it here.

"It's what we had at Brighton and that helped us get two championships on the trot. We could play - but we had that spirit."

Kuipers is set to make his debut for the Tigers in tomorrow's Pontins League Cup clash against Sheffield Wednesday at Boothferry Park (7pm).

It's not clear how long he will stay with City but he admitted the presence of Taylor was a major factor in his decision to move to swap the south coast for East Yorkshire.

He added: "I'm very pleased to be here. From the moment I arrived, all the lads have made me feel very welcome. It's excellent.

"I suppose it did come as a bit of a surprise. The gaffer (Taylor) lost Alan Fettis through injury and he needed another goalkeeper. He rang Steve Coppell - my manager at Brighton - and he said okay.

"I know Peter Taylor well from Brighton and I've a lot of respect for him. That's one of the main reasons why I'm so happy to come here. He's a very good manager and he'll do well at the club."

Kuipers could well challenge for a first team place in City's clash at Doncaster on Monday and the big shot-stopper admitted he would relish the chance.

He explained: "Every player wants to play in the first team. Sure, I'd love to do that here but I've just come to help support the lads and get a really good environment on and off the pitch.

"It's a very good set up and the stadium is superb. They are good supporters and they certainly got behind the team for the whole 90 minutes last Saturday.

"It was a major factor in us keeping going for the whole game. There was a time in the second half when it (the support) could have gone either way but they stayed with us and that paid off."

Meanwhile, Kuipers should be in good company in that reserve team game tomorrow with the likes of his ex-Brighton team-mate Steve Melton and Jamie Forrester both set to play.

Summer signing Andy Dawson is expected to be included after recovering from a knee injury and Danny Webb is scheduled for a run out, despite a recent bout of tonsillitis.
