My Ford Galaxy V6 Auto has decided to have its monthly breakdown, but this time its a weird one. Basically the car wont reverse.:annoyed: Goes thru all the forward gears no prob. It's really hard driving around knowing you cant go backwards too!
Any1 out there care to hazard a guess? Anything i can check? I think i will take it to a garage tommorow, Can any1 recommend one good with autoboxes and that wont rip me off/do a good job? Is there so such thing?

Sharp intake of breath. Sounds expensive. There used to be a good place in Newtown Road Hove that was good, but I couldn't say if they are still there.

Cheers. I also fear it could be costly (more costly than the car TBH).
Oh, and i have turned it off and back on again!

first thing to do is get a haynes manual and take apart the gear sitck console to make sure nothing stuck/not workgin round there. a mate had a similar problem with a Merc and found it was just the lever wasnt moving far enough in the slot to register, due to rubbish/gunk stuck in the way.

Right here, right now
Check the gearbox fluid level is topped up to the right mark. If that is ok, throw the car away.

I used to work for a Ford dealership and it was known, on more than one occassion, for the reverse solenoid to breakdown, they were not cheap and would need to go onto a diagnoisis machine for the gearbox to be reset (not sure if that was actually required), once the new part had been installed.

sad throw-away society, it could just be a bit of grit in the way, but chuck it instead. Offspring's solanoid sounds interesting and i bet if it is that you'll find a ford forum telling you how to fix it for a £10 (or a fraction of dealer prices at least).

Thanks for all of the replies. Have checked the selector for a simple fix and plugged in the diagnostics too but nothing doing. Bit the bullet today and took it down to the auto-specialists down newtown road (changed a lot down there!) Just waiting to see how many kidneys i'll need to sell now!

How about turning the engine round? That way you'll have at least 4 reverse gears.

You were right. Got the estimate today £1640 for a new box fitted. Gutted, and not really sure what to do now either

Bridges are paying £50 - £100 for scrap cars, so off it, and pick up another car with a years ticket for about £300 in The Friday Ad. Or does it have the dreaded 'sentimental value'?
