Euros 2012 - Ukraine receives scathing attacks from animal lovers across Europe

Ukraine has come under huge criticism from animal welfare organizations for killing stray cats and dogs in order to prepare for Euro 2012. It was reported from quite a while back that cats and dogs are poisoned with illegal substances, shot or simply burned alive in a mobile crematorium. In November 2011 the Ukrainian Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources urged mayors around the country to stop killing stray animals for half a year and build shelters instead, but it remains unclear how the ban would be enforced. The ministry's comments also seemed to suggest that the six-month ban was only a temporary measure, drawing further criticism. In April 2012, it was found that despite promises from Prime Minister Mykola Azarov to stop the killings, dogs were still being regularly slaughtered in preparation for the tournament.

Thoughts?
How to protest?

Sounds good to me if he stops the spread of rabies

Apparently there's an angry feminist movement in Ukraine that plans on staging nude protests in the run-up to the tournament. They'll probably jump at the opportunity to save Max and Tiddles.

You could do worse than support the charity Four Paws, who are conducting a major neutering programme across Ukraine, to convince the authorities that this is a better solution than killing the strays.

Many thanks, great info ...

They have always killed stray cats and dogs , just the animal rights people jumping on the band wagon . Not many people want strays in Ukraine , may be they should teach the population more and vet them (excuse the pun) before they buy a pet , this will be better.

Here, there and everywhere
It's not just the cats and dogs either.

Ukraine are also proposing to make it illegal to be gay or lesbian in public http://www.allout.org/en/actions/ukraine

Plus Soll Campbell has advised England fans not to travel there "for fear of coming back in a coffin" because of the racism there. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/england/9294177/Sol-Campbell-warns-England-fans-to-avoid-Euro-2012-for-fear-of-coming-back-in-a-coffin.html

It all sounds horrendous. It could turn into a bloodbath, or FIFA could use it to 'set an example' with its racism agenda, though I suspect they will be out of their depth.

The list goes on. Why do Fifa allow these countries to host events like this when they have track records like this.

Money before peoples safety as always.

Only if you are stupid enough to believe what you see in the press!?!

Whether you agree with their customs/laws or not it's their country and not our place to tell them how they behave in it.

this

and also this is why I hope the whole British public shun the vile place, what in hells name made the football authorities choose such a shit hole
abuse of animals is the least of it homophobia is rife along with racism and sporadic violence.

will our football hiaracy have the guts to walk the players off if they start getting the racist abuse they most undoubtedly will get and fly home

Just seen Sol Campbell being interviewed on the news. Panorama has some very uncomfortable viewing tonight. Thugs knocking the crap out of some Asian fans whilst the stewards just stand idily by.

That is probably the most narrow-minded piece of bullshit I've read on here in a long time, and that takes some doing!

For starters, nobody is *telling* anybody how to live in their own country, but even their own mayors realise what they have doing is against all realms of human decency, otherwise they just wouldn't stop doing it. Largely because they wouldn't give a shit what anybody else thinks.

But more importantly, when you given a major international event like the Euros, you accept that other nations / cultures / do-gooders are going to have their say because the country ends up in the spotlight.

Just as well some people are prepared to report on it, because everybody is being encouraged to visit these places by handing them events like this, and frankly people need to know what they are letting themselves in for.

Can you imagine what type of world we'd live in if everybody shared the view of being dismissive? Ask a considerable number of Syrians whether or not we should give a monkeys about their country right now...

Yes they are, the initial poster is asking how "we" should protest.

And why should they give a shit what anyone else thinks? In a months time the eyes of Europe will be elsewhere and they'll be able to go back to their normal lives.

Quite as this thread proves. But what place do we have to tell them what they should and shouldn't be doing in their own country.

I've been to the Ukraine, it's like going back in time 30 years.

Just as well some people are prepared to report on it, because everybody is being encouraged to visit these places by handing them events like this, and frankly people need to know what they are letting themselves in for.

Christ on a bike! You can't pick up a paper or switch on the telly without being told you are going to get raped, pillaged, racially abused and have tiddles the cat put in the stew pot. Here's a shocking revelation for you though the majority of it is sensationalist bollocks!

England fans aren't traveling to the Ukraine because of apathy towards the national side and the fact the place is a shithole not because of any human or animal rights issues.

I guaranty you there will be 3 if not 4 times as many people traveling to Brazil in 2 years time which is probably allot more dangerous than the Ukraine and Poland put together.

Can you imagine what type of world we'd live in if everybody shared the view of being dismissive? Ask a considerable number of Syrians whether or not we should give a monkeys about their country right now...

That's just laughable. Are you seriously comparing what is going on in Syria to a couple of moggies getting a rock round the back of the swede?

you can judge a person and for that matter a nation on the way they treat their animals but even the Ukrainians have to go some to beat some nations even closer to home
the Ukranians along with many nations are somewhat base
