Good to see Dr Caroline Lucas win her seat back. Well deserved in my opinion

2 UKIP seats:nono:

Not wanting to open up the debate about whether they are posh BNP or not again, I just think it is sad that the people of the South East are essentially down 2 representatives (3 if you include the reduction seats allocated), as UKIP MEPs has previously showee themselves to be very poor at looking after the interests of their constituents.

I accept that they are not there are supporters of the EU, however as democratically elected representatives they should take their responsibilities are little more seriuosly.

Look at this nonsense taken from the UKIP website. It beggars belief:

Five lies about Britain in Europe

20-05-2004

In May 1970 the Labour government under Harold Wilson declared that it intended to begin negotiations for the UK to join the EU. One month later the Conservatives under Ted Heath took over and the process of negotiation got underway. This culminated in a White Paper which the government shortened into a booklet to persuade a sceptical public. The following five quotes about a Britain inside the European Community are taken from that booklet:-

1. “There is no question of Britain losing essential national sovereignty”

A lie. Between 55% and 70% of all legislation going through Westminster, now originates in Brussels. We have already lost over half our sovereignty, and that percentage is increasing remorselessly.

2. “When a government considers that vital national interests are involved, decisions are only made if all members agree”

Untrue. Under majority voting rules, Britain can be and often is outvoted by the other members on most areas of policy.

3. “Our people and our industries (will be) more prosperous ..... than if we remain outside.”

Untrue. The two countries in Western Europe which have remained outside - Switzerland and Norway - are, per head of population, both better off than Britain.

4. “The English Welsh and Scottish legal systems will continue as before ...”

A lie. Since we joined the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg can and does overrule decisions taken by the highest courts in Britain.

5. “The (existing members) have not lost any of their national identities, national institutions and points of view. Nor will Britain.”

A lie. From the innumerable small businesses overwhelmed by EU red tape, to our distinctive British passports, we have lost out. From our traditional weights and measures, to national self-sufficiency in farm produce, we have lost out. Under 30,000 EU Directives the distinctive and historic nations of Europe are all being ‘harmonised’ out of existence.

You could drive a bus through this shit, with the possible exception of point 1.

The problem with UKIP having MEP's, is that, like Sinn Fein and Westminster, they have instantaneously lost their credibility.

You cannot say that Britain should leave the EU, and then serve in a Parliament that effectively determines EU policy. All they will do is attempt to dismantle the institution in which they serve - and they will do this at our ( the taxpayers ) expense.

If you thought Brussels legislation up to now was barmy, just imagine what UKIP are going to dream up !

As a transport professional, I spent three years as a member of a government advisory committee that (among other things) was looking at the regulatory framework for buses. Our big achievement was the requirement that all new buses have to be low-floor buses of the kind that are now commonplace in Brighton (and elsewhere).

These buses will eventually be the standard throughout the EU.

Why? Because Brussels will introduce EU-wide regulations.

But where do these regulations originate? NOT Brussels, but London.

People don't seem to realise that EU Regulations usually start off in one of the Member States. They are not dreamt up by faceless bureaucrats, but are often piloted in one of the Member States in partnership with industry and consumers. It's a very effective way of developing good practice and improving standards of service.

What UKIP want is to deny the UK (particularly UK industry) the opportunity to participate in programmes that advance good practice. This is bound to be to the detriment of Britain.

Oh - another thing I found ... a surprisingly high proportion of Brussels bureaucrats turn out to be UK passport holders.

Well, more to the point, as Kilroy admitted in an interview last week, he doesn't support their other policies (especially - and he did specifically point to this issue - their BNP-like immigration policy). So, I think it's more that he WISHES them to be a single-issue party. And, of course, their support is single-issue.

Combining BNP and UKIP votes means that over one-fifth of south-east voters supported the far-right on Thursday. :nono:

That point about losing the distinctive British Passport, is particularly laughable.

A passport is just a document to prove you are able to pass over a Countries border.

The EU passports are still issued in the UK by UK officials, the only thing thats changes is the shape and size ( and that would probably have changed anyway with changes in technology ).

They'll make the same arguement about the pound as well no doubt.

As for Sovereignty, well the Queen is still the Queen, so that unchanged. Legal system, I think we still have magistrates & judges scentencing people in UK Courts for UK offences don't we ?

Majority voting doesn't apply where vital national interests are involved.

As for point 3, what has Switzerland or Norway got to do with the UK economy, I mean c'mon, chocolate & cuckoo clocks ( as Jeremy Clarkson once said ).

And I'm still English ( at least when I last checked ).

I ain't whinging. And I am happy to accept that most people that voted for UKIP didn't vote because of their more dangerous and fascistic policies. But that doesn't mean that UKIP is some cuddly, democratic organisation.

looney right = fascist
