This squad is as bad as Euro 92. On the other hand, the Euro 96 squad isn't brilliant either but they did OK.

With England, it's all about keeping the best XI fit and card-free. An injury to any one of Beckham, Gerrard, Campbell or Owen and we're scuppered.

We've got the best midfield we've had in years. We've got our worst keepers in years. Defence is okay.

What's going to make the difference is the strikers. I have a feeling Rooney is going to be our star of the tournament - once he replaces Heskey in the third game

Clearly, we do better the more Spurs players are in the squad. . .

Am always confident about an England team with Owen up-front - on-form and uninjured he can be the best striker in the world. Fingers crossed he's both those things this summer. . .

Defence looking shaky - worry less about the centre-backs than the full-backs, in fact the whole lack of solid organisation.
But can't ask for better form this season from Gerrard and Lumpalard, reckon they'll be more important than Becks.

And, call me biased, but would fancy Defoe to come on as sub and scored a much-needed goal more often than Heskey or Vassell, but still. . . Hopefully Rooney's been saving his firepower for Portugal.

All in all - optimistic about this summer. But I always am.

Still can't believe just how badly that 88 side did, though. . .

Where is the squad for Italia 90 ?

Best team since '66 by a mile - Gascoigne, Linneker, Shilton, Waddle etc ?
