Apart from the run-of-the-mill stuff such as team news/match reports, does the Argus satisfy for your thirst for Albion news? Do you think the paper gives the club and issues affecting it balanced and comprehensive coverage? Or do you think the Argus could be more involved and supportive?

Well I think the Sports Argus is quite good actually... maybe more can be done with the Evening editions though

I think the Argus coverage of the Albion in sporting and club news terms is pretty good. Naylor doesn't just accept what is spoon-fed to him and looks for the real stories, without which you have a load of press releases.

Falmer is obviously a bigger issue than just the sports section, and I think it's a shame the editorial line at the front of the paper hasn't been more strongly in favour. The line about 'having to stay neutral' doesn't wash. As editor you can do whatever you like, it doesn't have to be fair. Papers are campigning all the time.

Nah, YOU should know full well that Andy Naylor has a very good reputation amongst those that follow that dismal science of sports hackery. The Argus and Brighton are very lucky to have him - he reads the games superbly and strikes a balance very well between being detached enough to report the good and the bad, and yet being engaged enough to provoke some good debates, eg. his campaign for Leon to be player of the season, his provocative stuff about the Withdean atmosphere, and his defusing of that armband rubbish today.

There was a fear that when Bradshaw introduced more national stuff in the Argus sports pages, that this would crowd out Albion news. In fact, the opposite has happened, the Albion features have got better and the national news makes it a more satisying package.

The only false step has been Gary Nelson's column which is rubbish. I don't think he even went to see Brighton in the play-off final, that's CRAP for an Argus columnist. Much as Ian Hart makes a few false steps on radio, I miss his more reflective column and Bradshaw made a mistake replacing Harty with Nelson. Mike Ward is very good.

The Sports Argus is a good read too, particularly now they employ better columnists these days :p

We'll see how long this Argus improvement lasts now they've got that Johnston Press bloke into lead it all though :glare:

Dare I ask, why are you asking all this, are you planning to launch something to put the Argus out of business :D

They've quoted me today, in the Fan's View:clap2:, so for once I can say that they seem well-informed.

Yep, I do rate Naylor highly.

I'm only just getting back into the habit of picking up an Argus now and again after a long period of disinterest and it is only since being exposed to pals and work colleagues with new and enthusiastic Albion leanings that I've pondered the Argus coverage. ;)

Like Tooting Gull I thought The Argus should save the fence-sitting for general news but really get behind the Falmer bid. Not just in print but in practical campaigning ways. Or perhaps it does, like I say I've not been an avid reader of late.

And one can never rule out a return to an old stomping ground!

Re Bradshaw - he is passing his time as a downtable news sub on The Times pending new opportunities...

Gary Nelson - he of "Left Foot Forward" fame? Or just a twat like Mr Angry of years gone by? :)

:lolol:

It's the same Gary Nelson, great books, rubbish (for Albion fans anyway, his stuff is too general) columnist.

The Argus has got behind the Falmer bid and done a lot of good stuff over the past couple of years.

But of course it can always be improved. Watch this space, eh? ;)

NR SOUTHAMPTON
Next time your at a away game buy a local paper and tell me does the town/city's paper give any better coverage?
The Evening Echo Southampton has a fans page each Thursday
but the rest of the week the coverage is so boring.
Guess it must be difficult to fill page after page each day about one team.
Away from the Albion at least the Argus gives non-league a fair crack the Echo around here is rubbish.
Sailsbury which for those that don't know is in Wiltshire get more coverage than alot of non league teams in Hampshire.
The usual rubbish about north of the county etc.
Basingstoke Town FC is the same distance from Southampton as Sailsbury and in the county yet get a few lines if they are lucky.
:bhasign:

I got the sports evening in Sheffield after the game last week and it wasn't anywhere near as good as the Sports Argus.

Admittedly, it has to cover a lot more teams - but you know how people complain that Naylor's report gets a bit sketchy for the last 20 minutes of the game, well the Sheffield one was hilarious - we kicked off after half-time and then suddenly Leon scored the winner :lolol:
