Does anyone think we will finish higher in the table than they previously thought?

After watching our first two games?

Having watched a few of our pre-season games, I reckoned we would finish about 10th. Having watched our games against Rotherham and the Gills, I still think that's where we will finish if we do not add some more quality to this squad of players.

Thing is, being someone who rates McGhee, I'd already factored in that he would do things that would give us a soft landing in this league - and he has done two significant things:

1) He has organised well a new line-up in defence that blends young legs and experience well, particularly creditworthy given the bad luck with Hinshelwood and Butters.

2) His gamble with the 4-3-3 formation has paid off, he correctly judged that it would get the best of Revell and nippier youngsters like Cox and Robinson, and he also correctly judged that the workrate of his forwards would not leave his 3 in midfield outnumbered and exposed.

Now I know there were some who were predicting we would have a relegation battle this season, if they have any sense they will be backtracking toot sweet, obviously. But I'm more interested in those who thought, like me, we would have a mid-table-ish finish. Have you seen enough that would now make you confident of a play-off challenge rather than mid-table?

I think what we have acheived is to beat probably a bottom 8 team away and probably a fellow mid-table team at home. Much sterner tests await where player class will be the determinant of results rather than clever tactical mixing and matching of players by McGhee. For me, we still lack that class.

I am hoping that McGhee slightly overacheiving with those players in these initial games will not take the pressure off the board in chasing new transfer targets. It would be easy now to sit back and say things are going smoothly.

Without an experienced targetman, I don't think we will be able to maintain the consistency that will deliver you a play-off place. It is pleasing we are at least targeting Parkin even if it doesn't end up coming off, Dick Knight and co must keep up the drive and ambition to deliver such a player to McGhee and the fans.

I predicted we will finish 4th-10th as the league is generally very close and I still stick by that.

Having said that - that was predicted with CKR to fill his boots, so if we can find a direct replacement for him (Parkin??) then I suspect we will be buzzing around that zone.

Hove, f***ing ACTUALLY.
I've always said we have the players and potential resources to finish in the top 6.

Therein lies our season. Midtable without, play offs with.

I still maintain we would have stayed up last year with said targetman.

I expected a poor start, bottom 8 by December but finishing 10th - 12th position. Higher if we make good signings (target man) in the January transfer window. Looks like I got our start wrong, luckily, but not convinved we can mount a serious promotion challenge... yet. Happy to be proved wrong.

Hmm. To be honest I haven't been to either of the two games, so cant really comment. But, I have alwasy said we will finish 6-10th and I stand by that. If we get a 20-goal-a-season man then we might have a chance of promotion.

I think after Forest away you will have a clearer idea of how good or bad we are going to be.

However what could count against us as teams become wise to us is that we still do not have a clear source of goals. Also if we lose Lynch (which is possible) we will struggle as it stand defensively.

I would agree with that, although the transfer window system should help us keep Lynch for the first half of the season at least.

I still think we get mid-table, but if we can find a decent target man who can hold the ball up well and score goals, then I might say we could get play-offs but at the moment I'm still say we'll get mid-table.

But on the plus side we are playing decent football for a change and it is great to watch.

Would Lynch be right to leave us this season? Hopefully he can see that a season with us would be highly beneficial and perhaps playing a bit and warming a bench somewhere would slow his progress.

To our advantage we have him on a 3 year deal. However if clubs are sniffing we could end up with an annoying deal of a low up front fee and then loads of add ons we will never get.

If he is being looked out, we need him to get an Under 21 Cap ASAP to push his value up.

Are you going to change your signature or are you still insistent that McGhee should go?

My thoughts exactly. In the words of the wise Winston Wolf, Lets not suck each others dicks just yet. We've beaten a Rotherham side who are opposition we would have hand picked for the first game of the season and a no better than mid table Gillingham side at home. Forest with players such as Tyson, Lester and Commons will show us what we are really up against.

I predicted mid table before the start of the season (and I still think that now) with a 6-1 chance of relegation. I think that relegation is more like 12's but even part of that price is due to the fact only 3 teams are effectively going down (lets face it Rotherham have had it already).

In the 'where will we finish' poll that was posted last week I plumped for twelfth. Not having the pleasure (?!) of having seen the team play any time recently means it's a little difficult to make any kind of accurate prediction. It was difficult to see where the promotion push was going to come from when the only player added over the summer was a non-league striker. Likewise it was difficult to see a second consecutive relegation due to the mix of 'been there, seen it, done it' senior players, a clutch of promising youngsters and a manager who has a very good track record at this level. Ergo twelfth was a nice safe bet.

However, as I can't actually see the performances and have no way of knowing how good/bad the opposition was or how lucky/unlucky we were, I can only go on results. Which means my optimism is streaming back after back to back wins and clean sheets. A very impressive start after the dismal way last season ended and the 4-1 drubbing by MK Dons in the final pre-season friendly.

I'm now thinking that sneaking into 5th or 6th place isn't beyond us. :clap2: :clap2: :clap2:

(of course if we lose the next two my optimism will vanish and I'll go back to my mid table finish)

You could argue we already have that. I would guess the first choice central defence pairing was Hinshlewood and Butters and they are both taking up residence on the Paul Kitson Memorial Table.
