some sample prices from 1955 - eggs, milk, bread, johnnies etc.

It's my parents' Golden Wedding next week and I have to get up and say a few words. I wanted to show that some things have changed, like the price of bread, but one thing that hasn't is Mum & Dad''s love for each other yada yada yada

All I can find so far is a load of sites showing changes in the Retail Price Index

HELP!!!!!!

I'm sure Downloaded Penguin can find something :lolol: :lolol:

I know, but most of the sites I looked at had a sort of back-dated thingy that went back.

I need to know some ACTUAL sample prices.

BTW Yorkie, are you going tomorrow?

No.

Fatboy I was 7. I do remember taking a shilling to the corner shop for a loaf of bread :lolol: I'm not sure how much it was though.

Sadly it was ten years before my birth, could ask my parents if that helps...

.. alternatively visit any corner shop in Croydon and ask the shopkeeper how much they were on sale for when they originally stocked them.

Interestingly according to that site butter accounted for 2 per cent of a household's expenditure in 1950.

I assume condoms were in short supply ?

(apologies in advance)

From fifties.net, this is a picture of a classic 50s haircut, the ducktail.

It should really be called the Hairy Fanny

Before my time, but I thought there was only BBC1 until the early 1960's - ie no ITV ??

Here and download the spreadsheet

http://www.statistics.gov.uk/STATBASE/ssdataset.asp?vlnk=5012

1950s prices

250g cheddar cheese 3p
500g margarine 5p
250g butter (home produced) 6p
Half dozen eggs (size 2) 11p

125g loose tea 5p
1 kg granulated sugar 5p
800g white sliced bread 2p
1 kg old potatoes 1p
1 pint pasteurised milk 2p

Are these the metric (decimal) conversion?
Pre 1971 pennies were always shown as "d" ie 5 (new) p was the same as 12d (a shilling) as in the 500g marge above
