Does anyone know how exactly how much Alan Mullery threw in the puddle

tend to agree about the mullery bamber era ernest.

However, how BHAEXPRESS can think of LLoyd as underrated is amazing. Under BL we played some of the worst football I have ever seen...Bristol Rovers Away at Bath 4-0 anyone???? And he dropped Dean saunders to play Richard Tiltman....good manager he was then?

Barry Lloyd was brought into to do a job and get rid of the high earners such as Saunders, Eric Young , Danny Wilson etc and never mind the consequences.
I happen to think that the team Bazza built as a result, the 1987/88 version with Nelson, Curbishley, Bremner, Rougvie etc was a very good one and that season of the following the Albion was one of my favourites.
The trouble with Bazza was his dour personality and sometimes that showed in his teams but I'll never forget he took us to one game away from Division 1 as was and whilst he brought some turkeys to the club like Tiltman, Horscroft etc he also brought the likes of Gotsmanov, Byrne and Michael Small.

rubbish
the teams he put out from 77-79 were the best albion sides i've ever seen and played the most exciting football I ever saw..................................................

and if you weren't there then you missed something miles better than the last three years..........................

Goodwin, Clough & Taylor, and later Taylor all had the same opportunity to do something special at BHA and failed for one reason or another, but it took Mullery to put it all into place.

ALBION: Steele, Gregory, Williams, Horton, Rollings, Lawrenson, Ryan, Ward, Maybank, Sayer, O'Sullivan.
Sub: Poskett

I wouldn't be quite so patronising Storer, I was there and before that. I aagree the team was the best we've ever had but it was also by far and above the most expensive. There was a lot of expensive dead wood in the squad too.

Oh, and who was the manager who sold Peter Ward ?

Oh I dunno DTG, thought we looked okay when we won promotion and lost the '91 play off final. You must have been at home listening to your Genesis albums at the time.

Apart from Jeff Woods and other short term N'er do wells (Jimmy Case) we played our worst football under Brian Clough.

Ward was feckin useless when we sold him in 1980. Stroopy little so and so with a big perm and an even bigger chip on his shoulder. Had fallen out with Mullery, didn't want to play for us anymore, couldn't have scored in a house of ill-repute etc etc

And we got 400k for him (that's nearly 4 Mark Lawrenson's),

and a player (although that turned out to be Andy Ritchie!!!)

Ward was out of touch thanks to gobshite Mullery constantly being on his case. Ritchie never delivered for us the way that he did when he moved on to Oldham (via Leeds).

Also, Mullery throws a tantrum as he didn't get his way with Mike Bamber and then, when for some inexplicable reason we invite him back. With limited funds he was shite as he was with QPR and Palarse.

Good but not that good.

Mullery was a complete wanker. He inherited a decent side, spent £238,000 on Teddy Maybank, and confined Peter Ward to the bench! Compare his achievements with those of Barry Lloyd, Steve Gritt, Micky Adams, and Mark McGhee. He was not in their league.

I know Mullery had more money to spend than any other manager in the Albion's history ,but he got us to Div 1 and for that I shall always be grateful. The years from '76 to '79 were fantastic, the "buzz" around Brighton was great.Unfortunately the bubble burst ,but it was good while it lasted

Mullery's side was exciting and good fun watching. We were quite often the underdogs going forward. Many sell outs.Maybank got loads of stick. Those were the days standing in the South stand.

Until we played big clubs that took over the south stand and we all moved into the North stand.Fun days.
