The £2million transfer of Tim Cahill to Crystal Palace has hit a stumbling block over a cash row.

Eagles chairman Simon Jordan has refused to pay £125,000 to the 24-year-old Millwall midfielder's agents SFX.

Jordan told the Sun: "I object to paying that for roughly half-an-hour's work when our fans are paying good money to come through the turnstiles.

"We offered the player a decent Premiership salary and he seemed very keen to join us.

"The agent then asked for five per cent on top, which equated to £125,000.

"I told him he doesn't work for me but for the player and to take the money out of his wages."

Absolutely agree with Jordan (gulp)

It's about time the players started paying their agents rather than expecting others to.

A very commendable stance - all other managers should do the same and rid the game of agents.

A needless waste of money.

ALL agents should be permanently banned from football and, if possible, SHOT!!!!!!!!!

Interesting piece in the local paper here last week showing that hardly any div 2 or div 1 clubs used agents in the last 12 months, and where they were involved it was the players who had to pay their cut.
If this is now becoming common practice in the league then it is no surprise that chairmen like Jordan want to force the issue when they arrive in the premier league. A good move, let's hope more follow suit.

I feel the same way as most other people here - actually agreeing that Simon Jordan is doing the right thing!

I read an article on the Football League web site that disclosed the details of how much money clubs paid to agents during the last season. The biggest spender in Division 2 was (perhaps unsurprisingly) Peter Ridsdale's Barnsley who blew around 60k on the "services" of agents.

Both Palace and Brighton chose not to use agents and paid them sweet F.A! Long may this continue.

Surely the club would have paid an agents fee for the Zamora transfer which although pre-season would count ?

Mind you BZs agent is a solicitor so maybe it is classed as a different fee ?

If Cahill wants a agent to negotiate his transfers he should pay for him out of his wages.

Saying that, emplyment agencies I use charge the company I work for not me.

nothing to do with the fact that they didn't have 2 mill to spend on on the player in the first place and the whole thing was a farce.

(sorry just can't bring myself to agree with anything palarse do- except lose)

No way, Jose. Why would the club pay an agent to SELL any of our players? It would be bad enough if we paid any agent when we bought a player, but the day any agent receives anything from the club to sell a player is the day the chairman must go.

Most agents are scum.
