I personally think that cricketers are nowhere near as far up themselves as footballers. One of the really good things about going regularly to watch county cricket is how easy it is to get to meet and talk to the players.
They wander around the ground like regular guys. They exchange banter with supporters. They sign autographs. They let people take photographs. In particular they act like human beings in the company of young supporters.
The last few days must have been a bit overwhelming for them - suddenly they start getting mobbed and treated like stars.
Very few of them have any idea how to deal with this.
Some footballers, on the other hand, seem to think that an appearance as a substitute in a pre-season friendly is the same thing as being half way up the ladder of fame that has Posh Spice at the top.
They have every idea about how they'd like to deal with "fans".
The truth of the matter is that the best of them - cricketers and footballers - keep their feet on the ground. And get the ultimate accolade - a thread on NSC that starts "I met ................ in Brighton last night. Top bloke".
Agree with you there. Although that ugy was a bit pompus, I can forgive him sa he had a few drinks! However, met Bobby Zamora once, and have no arguments in calling him a
I went up to him in the beach club and said something along the lines of "I know this is stupid, but I just wanted to say I think your a great player for the Albion" (and no I wasn't drunk). He turned away and walked off. His mate looked me up and down and said "He don't fancy you love". I was livid! I wasn't trying to chat him up, just say I was a fan of his.
