so my old iphone is out of contract and beginning to die and I went along to the o2 shop to see what deals I could get. It turns out that you cant get discounted upgrades but I kept pushing for a deal. The salesman then said that he could sell me one of his employees discounts for £100, this would save me £288 on the contract that I was looking at (£188 if you take off the £100). I'm pretty sure they're not supposed to do this but it could save me a lot of money. Of course I went home and checked online and it is true that every o2 employee gets 18 discounts for family and friends giving 30% off. Has anyone else heard about this or done this? I'd just like your thoughts, should i do it?

You could always just go for a handset that isn't an iPhone.
The networks can do you deals on regular handsets because they're not tied to Apple's huge demands for ludicrous profits. However you'd need to do this by calling them up on the phone rather than going into the store.
This salesman is obviously rather cheekily trying to make a quick ton out of you. I'm amazed that O2 give their staff such good discounts though, and 18 of them? Really?

Ring O2 and see what they will do. We took iPhones that had been returned within the cooling off period, nothing wrong with them and got them for free.
