I just assumed they carried them on from then because it seems like an incredibly cheap and easy way to make (a small amount of) money.

Yes, I had forgotten about the Covid ones (I think they initially made those downloadable by everyone, not just season ticket holders).
They originally offered a digital version ten(?) or so years ago but I think it only lasted a season or two - was great for far-flung fans.
It is indeed unfortunate that they chose to withdraw the service.
