The BBC commentator was bemoaning that so many of these England players are top Premiership performers but can't seem to turn it on for their country.

So !!!!!!!

Such naivety is embarrassing. The Premiership is not the highest level that players can perform at..that is INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALL and in particular, the World Cup.
Like Athletes going to the Olympics, it is the fiercest competition, at the highest level and the cream always rises to the top.
Just because a footballer performs well in the Premiership doesn't mean he can make the step up to International level.
Tim Henman won a number of Grand Prix titles but wasn't good enough to lift a Grand Slam.
Very few of these England players are good enough at the highest level and whenever the World Cup comes around, they are always found wanting.
It is pointless looking for excuses when the players simply lack the class needed.
Every top Sportsperson has class and when I hear people referring to the likes of Gerrard and Rooney as " World Class " and great players, I am speechless.
Most of these England footballers are workmanlike. One or two are good players and Rooney ( when he is on top of his game ) is potentially very good.
If they picked a top 50 players from this tournament, I wouldn't put a single England player in that list.
Enough said.
