Oh, if only the Irish were able to raise better armies in the 13th century, you'd all be living in DublinBrighton now :drink: :drink: :drink: :drink:

2 thirds of the city calls it Derry, as does everyone outside of Ulster. Even Proddies call it Derry, albeit informerly and certainly not whilst talking politics.

But who's to say they're right? Afterall, most people call the city along the coast "Portsmouth" whereas I call it "a f***ing SHITHOLE". Am I wrong? ???

And there was me thinking it was named Londonderry because of help building the place from a large number of Londoners.

It is legally called "The City Of Derry", and this was proven when someone sucessfully protested his parking tickets as they were issued by a non existant organisation - Londonderry City Council. It is not legal to refer to the city as Londonderry.

The County of Derry on the other hand can be legally called either.

There are lots of paddies here in Australia who refer to it as Derry. I call it Londonderry because it winds them up.

Personally, I don't care. However, I do feel as though the place should be called what the people want to call it, not some tosser in Government. If the Irish want to call it Derry, then that's what it should be called. Just becase the British Government can call it Londonderry, doesn't make it right.

As for statements made on other threads about 'Well, it's under BRITISH CONTROL'. Please, grow up. Does that really matter? One thing to realise is that politicians only look out for themselves, not you, me, no-one else. It's one big f***ing game.

Look what Phony Bliar is trying to do with our country by passing more control to Brussels. Once that's done, we'll lose more control as an independant soveriegn state. At least by running our own country/economy we can kick the government out when they lose it.

Last think, get off LI's case. Yes, he can sometimes come across as a bit patronising, but often his posts are well thought out and worth reading.
