I can't believe that in this day and age we have a Premiership Footballer who cannot play abroad because he's scared of flying.

IMO this is ridiculous. Look mate, you're paid a very substantial sum to play football and this includes a certain number of games in Europe.

I know you're a bit scared but don't take the piss.

I know I'm laying myself wide open to an in-depth analysis of what is probably a widespread phobia but it just gets on my TITS.

Thank you

Who are they playing? Why can't the lazy bugger get there over-land.

These foreigners eh? Never heard of a tried and tested English lad refusing to travel.

I agree.

Although I was flying, with a mate recently, who confessed to a fear of flying.
I was surprised, & he said it's only recently come about, no real explaination, but it's getting increasingly worse. We then hit some turbulance, & he shat himself :lolol:.

Wasn't Bergkamp once involved in a very dodgy flight?.

It's not as if it's half way round the World.

Ridiculous

Three years ago for work, me and a colleague drove to Prague for an event. It took about 18 hours. This guys should put the effort in. I am sure the club could pay a couple of drivers, whilst he slept in the back.

Or is he scared of roads too?

For (probably) a weekly wage of in excess of £50,000, yes, I would.

Fair point, i would also, although it could be argued going all that way for that length of time for what is essentially one game, would cause him to play s**t cause he wont have trained with the team, possibility of DVT, he'll probably only sit on the bench any way! Also its easier for an Eatern European cult to kidnap him if he's driving!

I remember hearing his parents died in a plane crash although I've never seen any evidence since to suggest this is true. His fear seems to be generally accredited to a dodgy flight he took while on national duty.

I've always thought nobody ever argued with him because he had a very good reason for being scared and to be fair if he says he's not getting on a plane there's not too much anyone can do to make him board it. You could demand he flies with the squad then sack him when he refuses but then you've just lost a quality player who someone else will pick up on a free promising him they'll never force him to fly.

Stick him on a f***ing boat two days earlier and he`ll be there there when you arrive. Easy done it`s not rocket science for goodness sake.

I have always thought they should drug him like they do to BA in the A-Team! :lolol:

They didn't drug him, he was hypnotised so that everytime he heard the word "eclipse" he fell asleep.

Wasn't he part of the Dutch under 21 team that was largely killed in a plane crash. Not sure on the details of it but he obviously wasn't on the flight for whatever reason. Will research this on Google.

Found this in a BBC archive....

-----------------------------------------
A false bomb threat on the plane carrying the Dutch national side triggered panic and, reminded of a plane crash that had killed many Surinamese-Dutch players, Bergkamp decided not to fly again.

Don't you just HATE it when there is a sensible explanation

I like the turn of phrase "reminded of...."

Kind of like "Oh, this bomb threat reminds me of the time a lot of my friends got killed in a horrible plane crash. Note to self: Don't fly again."
