Euro-Braga shows off stadium hewn out of rock

By Rex Gowar

BRAGA, Portugal, June 18 (Reuters) - Hewn partly out of a rock face in an abandoned quarry, Braga's impressive Euro 2004 stadium is not like any soccer venue built before.

The Municipal stadium, built on the city outskirts and completed late last year, has only two very tall, steep stands with on end open to the face of Mount Castro, a rocky bluff, and the other to the valley beyond.

Its construction having required no small amount of blasting into the rock, it could bring new meaning to the favourite chant of the Denmark fans: "We are red, we are white, we are Danish dynamite".

Denmark were playing Bulgaria in a Group C match on Friday, the first of two tournament games hosted by Braga. The stadium also stages the Group D match between the Netherlands and Latvia on Wednesday.

The 30,000-capacity stadium, fittingly for one of Portugal's leading centres of learning, was designed by renowned Portuguese architect Eduardo Souto de Moura.

The roofs of the two stands are held up by steel cables across the breadth of the pitch.

While one stand rises alone with its back to Braga, the other rests on the rock face opposite and has a car park above with access for spectators and media down steep stairways into the terracing below.

It took three years to build and was inaugurated with a match between local club Sporting and Celta Vigo from neighbouring Spanish side Galicia in December.

Braga, in Portugal's north-western corner about an hour's drive from the Spanish border, was the regional capital in Roman times and a commercial centre.

The most important religious city in Portugal with numerous Catholic sites, it is known as the City of Archbishops and has a little under 170,000 inhabitants.

Sporting Braga was founded in 1921 and lifted the Portuguese Cup in 1966 but they have never won the league title.

The specifications of the design submitted to the client, Braga Municipal Council, read as follows: "Today, football is a show, just like the cinema, theatre or television. This is why we have chosen to build only two stands."

'A work of art'
Described as a "work of art" by Ernie Walker, chairman of UEFA's Stadium and Security Committee, the new Estádio Municipal de Braga is an extraordinary feat of engineering in one of the most original scenarios in the world. Its construction has attracted the interest of specialists from all over the globe. The tournament director, António Laranjo, is another great admirer of the design. "It is a jewel," he said. "It is not just a football stadium, it is absolutely unparalleled”.

We could do that at Falmer

One end of the Stadium blasted into a chalk face. I'm sure the environmentalists would love it.

:lolol:

you mean we blow up a large part of Withdean, sound idea, we could build a stadium there and we would have less opposition.:lolol:
