A far better argument is that last night's Rooney injury was a tailor-made opportunity for Alan Smith.

He scores goals, he holds the ball up, he harries defenders and he never, ever gives up.

He would have been a better option than Vassell, Heskey or Defoe in last night's situation.

Was about to say the same thing about Alan Smith. Would have been useful last night. Vassell does well for England but him and Owen together don't work.

Next season will be good re Smith & Defoe, if they both bang the goals in they they must be in with a shout of an England spot alongside Rooney...unless Owen starts scoring aswell in which case we can be happy!
