Defining moment to be called a great?

Apart from great moments in our past, Robbie Reinelt, Stuart Storer (still love the commentary on you tube) and Will Buckley first game at the Amex, do great players need a defining moment to be called a 'great'? Maradona 1986, Pele missing an open goal 1970 etc, Bobby Moore's tackle same year, Bobby Charlton 66 and Geoff Hurst. Messi seems to do it on a weekly basis.

Only asking because Ashley Cole is constantly labelled our world class left back. When I hear this I try to recall any moments or anything that should deserve that accolade. Stuart Pearce's 96 penalty (also on youtube) defines in my opinion Englands best left back for decades.
