Defeat with honour

Galling tonight, was that the best pure football we played under McGhee? But Wolves played the classic counterattacking game, and always looked dangerous.

The result was not a travesty, although we were a bit unfortunate.

Playing 4-4-2 we dominated the first quarter of the game. But for all our fine building work from defence, and the smart play in midfield, we couldn't quite create the killer chances for our front 2.

I thought Virgo and Knight both worked their arses off, Leon answering his critics on that score, but neither quite had that bit extra to outwit a very good Wolves defence.

Virgo has one brilliant shot just into the second half, but 3-4 very average ones that threatened the corner flag rather than goal. Never mnd, he's been a hero in recent games and was due some bad luck.

Leon, frustrating this, tried his heart out but the quicker, cuter Championship defenders can match him for pace and are just that bit stronger than him physically. He will come good though if he works as hard as this and backs himself.

Kerry Mayo I thought gave a masterclass to the watching Dan Harding about how to link with our midfield with passes that create rather than put your own team under pressure. But alas, he did seem to lose Miller for the goal, although redeemed himself a little later by winning a header in the same danger area. That's I think the selection problem McGhee has at the moment, Harding the (usually) better defender, Mayo the better all-round footballer.

Currie was his usual excellent self and IMHO is currentlly a class above everyone else in the team, I would give him seven MOTM awards, there is simply no debate at the moment.

The left was very good for us tonight, but the right flank didn't work as well. A hesitant El Abd for once, and Hinsh looks a round peg in a square hole. Nicolas was his usual very neat and tidy self, keeping our play flowing without ever quite threatening a match-winning pass - shame he delayed a release of a ball with Leon one-on-one with the Wolves goalie. Dean Hammond mirrored Alexis's tidy contribution. The form of our central midfield pair is a massive bonus for McGhee.

It was a bold move by McGhee to go 4-3-3 with half an hour to go. But McPhee didn't quite do enough with his half hour to suggest that he is a better bet than Virgs.

Jarrett came on at the end and ran the tiring Wolves defence ragged for a few minutes. I'm sure the siren calls for his inclusion will increase regardless of how that might impact the defensive shape of the team.

I'm a bit gutted by this result because we deserved more. But sometimes you don't get it.

A lot of positives though for us to build on and for large parts of this game we outplayed a team that was in the Premiership last season. We've come a long way in 12 months.

I'm confident we can give an improving QPR a massive fight on Saturday.

I am a bit worried about Leon. That Jolean guy had him covered ALL match.

Because he is our best forward, other teams put their best defender on him, yet I haven't seen him give any Championship defender any real problems so far this season.

I am wondering if this isn't a division too far for Little Leon.

Sums it up at present, he is struggling to produce at this level

He is still getting balls that are aimed for a 6ft6in striker instead of playing the balls through the defenders for him.

Virgo did well to unsettle the defenders in the air but is he now getting carried away with his ability to shoot from any distance. This showed a couple of times when he shot at goal and other players were better placed if they had been passed to.

Cant agree with LI about Mayo he is getting caught out too often now the goal was 50% him for not jumping and 50% Kuipers for having his feet in cement If either had done their job properlywe would have got a draw.

That might be true, but I'll want a look at the replay before faulting Michel. I don't think he could have moved quicker for the header because it was placed well enough to wrong-foot any keeper, but dunno about the cross.

Well, this was the first time I'd seen the Albion play in about a month and I am gobsmacked at how much they've improved as a side. They actually look a decent Championship outfit and weren't outclassed by Wolves at all. Wolves showed a little bit of higher league class at times, but let's face it but for a brilliant goal-line clearance this would have been 1-1 and a highly satisfactory result. Yes, we lost, but Wolves had to beat us sometime or other didn't they. I shan't be downhearted by this result at all (even though I still haven't seen the boys win this season!!).

Not guilty m'lud. They lost all their games whilst I was in Canada and only started getting results again upon my return, although unfortunately for various reasons today was the first game I got to attend!!

:p

I'd forgotten what Leon looked like!! Showed some nice touches, but was never put in a goalscoring position, so I'll reserve judgement on him until I've seen him in a few I think.

london irish makes some good points there in paticular bout the form of our midfield men, hinch looking out of place and el abd not having his best game but do think that dan harding is a better footballer than kerry the ball he played down the line for mcphee (i think?) in the last 5 was a fantastic pass and also remember other decent balls in the short time he was on.also dont think mcphee was given a fair crack tonight as instead of being put through the middle ( apart from last 5/10 mins) he seemed to be stuck wide on the right when obviously his height was needed in the middle to help virgs try and get some balls knocked down for leon.thought the game was crying out for albert to be introduced early in the 2nd half when it was obvious that despite all the effort and great football we were struggling to break them down

Agree with London Irish, I thought it was a good team performance, but just lacking in the killer instinct. It will come I'm sure ( hopefully this saturday ) I'd like to see more of Jarrett making those decisive runs at the defence.

I too was disappointed witht he result but I feel we are a match for most teams and certainly justify our place in the Championship league.

I don't quite agree compltely (even though I haven't seen all your games), but give the fella a chance. Jolean Lescott is IMO the best defender in this division.

All you need is an equally good forward to partner Knight and they won't be able to cope with him and his mazey runs.

We played the Goat for this reason alone pretty much last season.

How about Kuipers? He set off on one of his mazy runs last night

Yep lets write Leon off after just a few games. Like many did with Currie. 27 goals last season. Give him a chance and he'll score.

Lescott is a very very good defender. Goals won't be so easy for Leon this year because we're moving up a league and playing better teams but he'll get us goals. Lets not put him under pressure. The goals will come.

Mayo and Kuipers were equally at fault for the goal - Kerry shouldn't have lost his man, and Kuipers shouldn't allow a 5'9" striker to dominate him in the six yard box. He never used to be this stuck to his line, what's wrong with him?

Playing Hinshelwood on the right just doesn't work at home - every move that switched out to the right died as he went straight backwards. We need to be more offensive at home, as we seem to be struggling to unlock defences as it is.

I think that point is quite a common one.

I can see where those arguing it are coming from but I'll argue why maybe we shouldn't for argument if anything.

Hinshelwood isn't an attacking option but I think that he adds more to the team in a defencive role than an attacker would in an attacking role. So he's more effective doing his job than another is doing there's. Does that make sense?

Wolves sat back and let us pass it around last night knowing we were unlikely to hurt them. I don't think Hart/Jones or Jarrett have enough attacking nouce to be that much more successful than Hinsh.

Having said that when your chasing a goal you may as well go for it and I think Jarrett should have been on somewhat earlier last night.
