BBC Sport article combining a lot of things already known, but generally depressing reading

Fifa, the Club World Cup and Saudi Arabia

"There is no more mystery... Saudi Arabia has taken control of international football."
Sepp Blatter
The days on Infantino has left me looking back at the days when Blatter was in charge with misty eyed nostalgia.

Sepp likely had his hand in the till and certainly turned a blind eye to others doing so, but I think there was something in there, even if just a small percentage which he was doing for the good of the game. That's not true any more.

It's now 100% money and power

The "Biggest Event in World Football" starts tonight (Channel 5 if you're wondering). So who are you following ?

Literally wetting myself with excitement for, umm… ‘Botafogo vs Sounders’ on Monday - well worth staying up for the midnight GMT kick-off time, frankly.

I'm really hoping it will be a massive flop and wont' be watching or following any news. I'm guessing that, apart from the prize money, Chelsea and Man City could do with this like a hole in the head and their players will feel the same.

It's only the biggest event in world football inside Infantino's head as he continues to suck up to his petrostate mates.

I'll pretend I'm not interested, but I suspect in the absence of other stuff to watch, I'll have it on in the background when games are on when I'm not asleep.

See also: internationals, u-21 euros etc.

Talk Sport, who have the radio rights, are trying to make this sound great.
I've mentioned elsewhere there are a few games I'm up for that include the Brazilian teams against the big European hitters.
But some unknown Aussie team against some unknown Arab team at 1 am, nah.

This is where I am too.

The ONLY appeal of this sort of thing is two big clubs from different continents who ordinarily wouldn’t be playing against each other in anything vaguely competitive.

We know the latter stages are going to simply be a repeat of the latter stages of most CL seasons though.

I don’t imagine I’ll watch a minute of it, however, my slight “dog in the fight” is the Urawa Red Diamonds as they play at the Saitama 2002 stadium, the only stadium I’ve watched a live game at in Japan.

Can’t see them doing well, however.

My only interest in this tournament is in its failure. An Infantino vanity project that exists to exhaust players but enrich the handpicked participants. Once this farce is complete it will be interesting to see if there any negative impact on the Premier League participants who have been relieved of their summer break.

If you thought it couldn’t get any worse: Robbie Williams has recorded the official FIFA anthem, to be used at this and other FIFA tournaments going forward.

That’s up there with the Qatar vote when it comes to offensiveness for me.

You only need to take a look at the qualifying criteria for clubs to take part in it to realise what a joke of a tournament it is. I dont even think Man City or Chelsea fans are interested in it let alone any self respecting proper football fans. Its FIFA sanctioned money making and sportswashing event.
What are the qualifying criteria? Was talking about it in the pub last night and we couldn't work out why City and Chelsea have "qualified"?
