Background: A great prospect who was snapped up by Wycombe following Barnet's relegation to the Conference in May 2001. A former West Ham trainee who transfered to Shrewsbury for £70,000 in February 1996 before moving onto Barnet on a free. Has the unfortunate record of featuring in unsuccessful relegation battles with Shrewsbury, Plymouth and Barnet before the same fate with Wycombe at the end of the 2003/4 season.

What we think: A stylish player whose talents are plain to see. Appeared in all of Wycombe's League games in 2001/2 and may have only scored six goals in all competitions but three of those were pure quality and his numerous assists were also vital. Sadly the 2002/2 season saw him relegated to the bench on many occassions, especially away from home. Many fans felt he was under used and it could have been no coincidence that Wycombe's results suffered as a consequence.

Returned regularly to the starting line-up in 2003/4 and had scored seven times before the New Year. Relegation to Division Three was the end of the road for Currie at Wycombe as he became a victim of Tony Adams' mass clear-out and wage cutting exercise.

He departed by mutual consent on 10th May 2004 and commented "My contract has come to an end. I did have an option that the club could not afford to take up and we agreed to part by mutual consent. It was very difficult saying goodbye to the lads and I will miss everyone especially the fans who have been brilliant to me. I have had three very enjoyable years here and I hope that one day I will be able to return to the club again in some capacity or other. I’m really unhappy that my last season with the club has ended in relegation. It wasn’t the way I wanted it to end. I feel I can play in Division One. I feel fit and strong. I know I’ve got the same old problem I have had since I was one, in that I’m too slow, but I think I have the skills to make up for that”

Looks like he left because of wages. I thought this interview was quite funny - I hope it's true!

1st BECKHAM, 2nd CURRIE
(Thursday 6th December 2001)
Wycombe wonder Darren Currie has been compared to England Captain David Beckham by his Uncle Tony. Speaking in an interview for ITV Digital, Tony Currie said "Darren is, without doubt, the best crosser of the ball, after Beckham, in the country. He’ll produce nine times out of ten, right foot or left foot." Currie senior, a hero in his time for Sheffield United, Leeds United and QPR, reckons Darren should aim for more goals too. "I’m always telling him to shoot more, ‘cos he’s got a great shot, he can bend them, he can do anything with them."

And Uncle Tony wants his nephew to see more of the ball "I don’t think he demands the ball enough, I don’t know what the tactics are like at Wycombe but I’ve seen him 3 or 4 times this season and they don’t give him the ball enough."

27 year old Darren was just a few years old during his Uncle's heyday but he's glad to be continuing the tradition of the Currie name. Speaking to the Bucks Free Press after scoring his stunning 25 yard strike at Hayes in the FA Cup, he said "It's nice to keep the family name going and get a spectacular goal like he used to."

Tony, who will be 52 years old on New Years Day 2002, began his football career with Watford in 1967 but hit fame following a move to Sheffield United and went on to gain 17 full caps for England. He then moved to Leeds United in the mid 1970's before tailing out his full-time career at QPR. He later went on to spend a short time in Canada before returning to the UK for brief spells with Chesham United, Southend United and Torquay United.

The younger Currie added "I've said, for as long as I can remember, that to even be related to him is something to be proud of. He was a fantastic player. I used to be mascot at QPR when he played there and I'd go down as often as I could. As a kid I don't remember too much about him but I've watched videos of him and seen what a class player he was."
