I was speaking to a friend at the weekend who is well into dance music, he was trying to explain the difference between the different types i.e trance ,progressive house, house, techno, euro trance, Drum and base,
must say, gave me a bit of an idea .

it is my idea of hell to go to any dance club !!

but I do understand the passion when I see people dancing to it.
so I would never slag it of big style.

give me real instruments and words to songs anyday.

same thing as punk, trying to explain to someone who does'nt like or know it that there is many different styles: Political, Ska, Emo, Hardcore, Corny, Fast, Skate, Goth - all classed as a form as Punk but in society they think of mowhawks, black leather jackets and spitting on people in the street for no reason!

popkins...we may not see eye to eye about religion, but we are soul mates as far as music!!

Dance music = synthesised banging, crashing and oscillations
Rap Music = angry young ethnic men and women ( and Eminem) shouting obscenities and saying "yo" a lot
Trance = NFI
garage = Somewhere to park my car
House = somewhere to live in

I'm no expert, so can someone who knows about these things explain what 'Urban' music actually means? Does it just mean 'black' music, or is there some subtlety I'm missing?

Rap, scum of society.

Yep. Can't get into it at all when sober, and don't understand those who 'listen' to it at home.

Garage and Rap are not dance. Just the calling sounds of gangland riots.

Like old Dance music (well mid 90's). eg Prodigy and Chemical Brothers. Not into this new rubbish like DJ Sammy. Like Funky House at the moment. Played in Funky Buddha Lounge and casablancas. Stevie Wonder remixes, etc.

It appears you no expert whats 'black music' mean ?, Urban is a culture and while most of the music derives from coloured people there is an awfull lot of it done by white musicians,

Jamiroqui for one !!

Exactly, that's why I'm asking. You hear the phrase 'urban' used a lot to describe music, I've always wondered if it was just a way of avoiding saying it was 'black' by overly PC idiots who have a problem with the word, or whether it referred to a particular strand of music. I'm none the wiser, I have to say.

Incidentally, most black people find the word 'coloured' a lot more offensive than 'black'.

the problem with dance music like so many other genres is that unless u r really into the scene u only really get exposed to the crap.

its such a wide genre that its impossible to generalise and put it all in the same basket.

for instance, for many trance is dj sammy and the like, the pop tripe you hear in the charts, but the likes of paul oakenfold have been playing a more underground, hard edged tribal version for years. you simply cant compare the two.

in terms of dance types, the easiest way to identitfy the music is by tempo, drum pattern and instrument used- drum and bass is very fast and relies on its drum pattern, french house tends to be slower, more montonous and use filtered sounds, american house is always more vocal and has a 'gay' feel, trance is lighter and uses orchestrations and synths and female vocals etc, etc

anyway, im on one!!!

the key is that there is good dance music out there- some even have lyrics and real instruments. its just they very rarely rise above the pop shit filling the charts these days.

Sorry Redland but my best mates black and she HATES being called Coloured. She reads this poem to me once in a while about black not being coloured. Can't remember it I go into a kind of daze). The biggest insult she got was when we went out in Brighton, a black bloke tried chatting me up, she told him to piss off and he called her a coconut. The cheek!
