The man's still a genius when he wants to be.
Had the pleasure of watching him bat a few times for Warwickshire when I lived just around the corner in Edgbaston. Batting the beautiful way.

Mind you, find it easier to say this with England 3-0 up in the series.
I suppose this must be how Australia feel every time we get excited about winning the last Test of the series when they've already wrapped it up easily beforehand?
Without the minor matter of the 400n.o knock, of course. . .

He got the 501 the season after his 375, in June 1994. He had an inspired few months that year.

400 is the highest score in test match cricket. The 501 was achieved for Warwickshire against Durham and is the highest score in all first-class cricket.

Crap captaincy from Lara it appears. He should have declared ages before he did. It's a bit Geoff Boycottish to stay out there for selfish reasons. The records will show he has two of the 3 biggest test scores, but unlike Mathew Hayden, Lara won't have been on the winning side in either instance. To make matters worse, he then dropped a simple catch offered by Trescothick yesterday afternoon when he was yet to get off the mark. Trescothick went on to make 88 and England are now 231/1 (Vaughan 114no) and from this position they really ought to avoid defeat.
I can never understand teams racking up over 700 runs - the fact that the WI had wickets in hand should have meant a slog fest at the end of day 2, a score of over 600 and 3 days to bowl England out twice, with enough time for a possible small run chase for victory. This Windies team is simply not good enough to bowl England out twice in 2.5 days.

i just think that you're being a bit negative about the achievement. Perhaps you've only scored 399?
Yes I am being negative about the achievement - because it appears it's cost them the chance of winning the game, which is actually the idea. And would he have dropped that catch if he hadn't been batting for 16 hours and then spent another whole day and a bit in the field? Possibly not, I'd say.
