A cleaning woman stole a train in a Stockholm suburb before it ploughed into an apartment block, according to Swedish officials.

The cleaner took the empty commuter train from a train depot on Tuesday and drove it about a mile before it derailed.

The four-carriage train then careered for about 30 yards before crashing into the three-story building.

Police arrested the woman, who was flown to a Stockholm hospital with serious injuries. No-one else was injured.

Tomas Hedenius, a spokesman for train operator Arriva, was quoted by the AP news agency as saying: "We're investigating how this could happen, and why she did what she did."

It was unclear how she got the keys to the train, he said, but added driving the vehicle was not that difficult.

"Generally speaking that's possible even if you're not a train driver," he said. "You can read about it on the internet, or observe how others do it."
